Water Gardening Direct is an ecommerce retailer specialising in products and equipment for water gardening, ponds and related outdoor projects.
The business operates a product-heavy online store, where customers need to browse a wide range of products, compare technical specifications, find compatible items and understand delivery requirements before making a purchase.
The project was delivered in partnership with Grey Coffee, a design studio working across branding, hospitality, food and beverage, and retail businesses.
Grey Coffee led the wider client relationship and project direction, while I was brought in to handle the Shopify development, technical implementation and storefront functionality.
Water Gardening Direct serves customers interested in ponds, water gardening and related outdoor products.
Its audience includes pond owners, water gardening enthusiasts and customers looking for specific equipment, replacement parts, accessories and products for maintaining or improving their outdoor spaces.
These customers often need more than a basic product listing. They need clear product information, technical specifications, compatibility details, delivery information and helpful guidance to make informed purchasing decisions.
The storefront therefore needed to make a large and varied catalogue easier to navigate, explore and shop.
The Challenge
The goal was to develop a Shopify storefront that could support the complexity of Water Gardening Direct's product catalogue while providing customers with a clear and practical shopping experience.
The project needed to:
Create a clear navigation structure for a large product catalogue.
Improve product and collection page layouts.
Make it easier for customers to browse by category, product type and brand.
Present important product information, specifications and delivery details clearly.
Implement custom Shopify functionality beyond the standard Dawn theme.
Integrate the apps and tools needed to support the store's wider ecommerce requirements.
Provide a flexible storefront that could accommodate ongoing content, product and operational changes.
The challenge was not simply creating an attractive homepage. The store needed to support a large catalogue with different product types, technical requirements, product information and delivery arrangements.
Customers needed clear ways to find products, navigate between categories and access supporting information before purchasing.
Standard Shopify layouts alone would not provide all the functionality required. The storefront needed more tailored collection templates, product page layouts, navigation, filters and dynamic delivery information.
The project also involved a wider set of requirements, including app integrations, content migration, product data, supporting resources and testing.
The challenge was bringing these elements together into a coherent Shopify storefront that worked for both customers and the business.
Solution
I joined the project through Grey Coffee to provide Shopify development and technical implementation for Water Gardening Direct.
The store was built on a Dawn-based Shopify setup, which provided the initial foundation for the development work.
I extended that foundation with custom theme sections, navigation, collection and product templates, storefront functionality and app integrations.
A significant part of the work involved adapting Shopify to the needs of a product-heavy catalogue. This included custom mega menu functionality, collection layouts, product information, product filters, delivery messaging, supporting content and additional shopping features.
The project also involved configuring and integrating apps, supporting content migration, testing functionality and implementing the agreed storefront requirements.
Rather than treating each page as an isolated design, the development focused on creating a connected storefront where navigation, product discovery, product information and delivery details worked together.

Testing and Technical Delivery
Supported the implementation of the agreed storefront structure and functionality.
Assisted with content migration and upload.
Tested theme functionality, app integrations and key shopping journeys.
Worked through the development and delivery stages in collaboration with Grey Coffee.
Used Shopify apps and theme
Result
The project delivered a significantly extended Shopify storefront designed around the practical requirements of a large and varied product catalogue.
The custom development provided clearer navigation, more flexible collection layouts and richer product pages, helping customers access the information they need when browsing and purchasing specialist products.
Dynamic delivery messaging, product-specific functionality, supporting content and app integrations helped bring more of the store's shopping requirements together within Shopify.
The project also demonstrates my experience working alongside an agency, taking an agreed design and project direction and translating it into working Shopify functionality.
It is a good example of Shopify development that goes beyond basic theme customisation: building the technical features, templates and integrations needed to support a more complex ecommerce business.
