Custom Shopify Theme Development for a Documentary Production Company
CREATORVC is an independent documentary production company known for creating long-form factual entertainment for passionate fan communities.
Its releases cover specialist subjects and established entertainment franchises, with projects supported by rich content, distinctive creative direction and dedicated audiences.
The company uses Shopify as part of its public-facing storefront, providing a platform to present documentary releases, products and supporting content.
I began working with CREATORVC in 2021, providing Shopify development across its storefronts. My role focused on theme development, storefront improvements, flexible architecture and technical implementation.
CREATORVC serves passionate audiences interested in documentary filmmaking, film history, cult cinema and specialist entertainment subjects.
Its customers include dedicated fans who want to explore documentary releases, discover additional content and purchase products connected to the films and subjects they follow.
These audiences often want more than a conventional product page. They value detailed information, visual storytelling, supporting media and a clear presentation of what each release includes.
The storefront therefore needed to bring documentary content and ecommerce together in a way that reflected the individual identity of each release.
The Challenge
The goal was to develop a more flexible Shopify storefront that could support CREATORVC's content-rich documentary releases and evolving creative requirements.
The project focused on:
Developing a custom Shopify theme tailored to the business's requirements.
Creating a more flexible and modular theme architecture.
Supporting richer content and storytelling alongside standard ecommerce functionality.
Improving product and content page layouts.
Making it easier to adapt the storefront for different documentary releases.
Providing a maintainable technical foundation for ongoing development and updates.
CREATORVC's storefront needed to do more than display a conventional product catalogue.
Different documentary releases had their own creative direction, content requirements and product presentation needs. The Shopify theme needed to accommodate these differences while maintaining a consistent and straightforward customer journey.
As the storefront requirements evolved, the existing theme foundation needed greater flexibility.
Standard product and page layouts were not enough to support the richer content presentation required across different releases.
A more adaptable theme architecture was needed to give the business greater control over its storefront, content layouts and ongoing updates without having to rebuild the underlying structure for every new project.
Solution
I began working with CREATORVC in 2021, supporting Shopify development across its public-facing storefronts.
As the requirements evolved, I supported the move towards a more modern Shopify theme foundation and later developed a custom Shopify theme tailored around the company's content-led ecommerce requirements.
The custom theme was built using Shopify Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with an Online Store 2.0 structure and modular architecture.
The development focused on creating flexible page layouts, improving product presentation and giving the business more control over how documentary releases and supporting content were displayed.
My work supported several public documentary releases, including Aliens Expanded, The Thing Expanded and In Search of Darkness: 1990–1994.
Each release had its own creative direction and content requirements, so the theme needed to provide enough flexibility to support those differences while keeping the shopping experience consistent.
The relationship has continued beyond the initial theme development, with ongoing Shopify improvements, technical refinements and storefront support.
