Original Duckhead is a London-founded, design-led umbrella and weatherwear brand known for its distinctive products, colourful designs and commitment to more sustainable materials.
Founded in 2012, the brand has built a reputation for turning an everyday essential into something customers genuinely want to carry, combining considered design with practical functionality.
Its products use recycled materials, and the business is a Certified B Corporation and member of 1% for the Planet.
As the brand expanded its product range, wholesale presence and direct-to-consumer business, its Shopify storefront needed a technical foundation that could keep pace with its growth and evolving creative direction.
Original Duckhead primarily appeals to design-conscious consumers who value individuality, quality and more considered purchasing decisions.
Its audience includes customers looking for distinctive, well-made accessories that combine practical everyday use with personal style. Sustainability-conscious shoppers are also an important part of its audience, particularly those who appreciate recycled materials, responsible manufacturing and products designed to last.
The brand's colourful collections, distinctive designs and giftable products also appeal to customers looking for something more individual than conventional everyday accessories.
The Challenge
The primary goal was to move beyond the limitations of a heavily customised third-party Shopify theme and establish a lighter, more flexible storefront that could support Original Duckhead's continued growth.
The project aimed to create a custom Shopify theme that better reflected the brand's visual identity, improved control over the shopping experience, supported ongoing design changes and provided a more maintainable technical foundation.
It also needed to accommodate custom storefront functionality, evolving product presentation and the requirements of a growing Shopify Plus business without introducing unnecessary technical overhead.
The store had originally been built using a purchased Shopify theme, which had been progressively customised to accommodate the brand's requirements.
As the business evolved, the accumulated custom code, styling changes and bespoke functionality made the theme increasingly difficult to maintain.
Major theme updates could require custom changes to be reapplied manually, creating additional work and potential complications.
The brand was also continuing to introduce new products, campaigns, visual refinements and design changes. The existing theme structure was becoming a constraint rather than a flexible foundation for that work.
A more tailored solution was needed to give the storefront greater flexibility, improve maintainability and make future development more straightforward.
Solution
After initially supporting Original Duckhead through customisations to its existing Shopify theme, I worked with the brand to move towards a fully custom Shopify theme.
The new storefront was developed around a lightweight, performance-focused foundation, using Shopify Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and AJAX.
Rather than adapting an increasingly complex third-party theme, the custom build was shaped around the brand's actual requirements. This provided greater control over the storefront experience, reduced reliance on inherited theme functionality and made future changes easier to manage.
The work also extended beyond the initial theme development, with ongoing improvements, custom storefront features and support as the business continued to evolve.
Custom Shopify Theme Architecture:
Replaced the increasingly restrictive third-party theme with a purpose-built Shopify theme.
Created a lighter front-end foundation using Shopify Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Reduced reliance on unnecessary third-party theme functionality.
Performance and Maintainability:
Built the storefront around a more controlled, performance-conscious implementation.
Focused on cleaner front-end code and more efficient asset usage.
Made future design changes and feature development easier to manage.
Custom Storefront Functionality:
Implemented tailored storefront features to support the brand's shopping experience.
Developed custom bundle-building functionality to help customers shop complementary products together.
Refined product presentation, layouts and shopping interactions.
Ongoing Development:
Continued supporting theme updates, design refinements and new features.
Adapted the storefront to evolving product collections, campaigns and brand direction.
Provided ongoing Shopify development and maintenance as the business grew.
Used Shopify apps and theme
Result
The project gave Original Duckhead a purpose-built Shopify theme designed around the needs of its growing ecommerce business.
Moving away from an increasingly restrictive third-party theme provided greater control over the storefront, a lighter technical foundation and a more maintainable approach to ongoing development.
The custom theme has supported continued design changes, product launches, new functionality and the brand's evolving visual direction.
The relationship has also continued beyond the initial development, with ongoing Shopify support, improvements and feature work as the business has grown and upgraded to Shopify Plus.
The result is a more flexible storefront that can evolve alongside the brand rather than requiring every new requirement to be worked around an inherited theme structure.
