Code is delivered remotely, so a developer's track record matters more than their city. Start from a written scope: what you need built, which apps and systems it touches, and how you will know it works. A specific brief gets quotes you can compare line by line.
Then check how each company handles the parts of a US build that go wrong most often.
Sales tax. Since the 2018 Wayfair ruling, states can require you to collect sales tax once your sales there pass their thresholds. Your developer sets up Shopify Tax or your tax app and tests orders to the states you sell to; your accountant decides where you register. Our Shopify tax setup guide covers the settings.
Accessibility. The Department of Justice's guidance since March 2022 says the ADA applies to the websites of businesses open to the public. Ask how the developer tests keyboard navigation, focus states and screen-reader labels on custom sections. Our accessibility guide has the checks.
Privacy opt-outs. State privacy laws, such as California's, give shoppers the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of their data. The developer wires pixels and tags so they respect the shopper's choice.
Proof. Ask for live US stores they built in the last twelve months and, on larger projects, speak to two of those merchants.
