How Klaviyo cost is calculated: active profiles
Klaviyo cost depends on how many people you can reach, not how many emails you send. Klaviyo calls them active profiles. From Klaviyo's own billing documentation (Klaviyo Help Center, "How Klaviyo billing works", checked 19 October 2026):
- What counts. Any profile that can be emailed through Klaviyo is an active profile, regardless of consent status. The bill counts active profiles that can receive at least one type of marketing.
- What doesn't. Unsubscribed and suppressed profiles are excluded once they are processed, and deleted profiles don't count. The count can take up to 72 hours to update.
- Sends. Each profile tier includes a monthly email send allowance. Received and bounced emails count toward it; skipped emails and double opt-in confirmations don't.
- Going over your profile tier. Klaviyo doesn't stop you sending. It notifies you and moves you to a higher tier from your next billing cycle.
- Going over your send allowance. You can turn on auto-upgrade, buy a one-off flexible overage, or stop sending until the next cycle.
- On the free plan. If you are over the profile limit, you can't send emails until you are back under it.
