Hire Shopify Experts for Kenya
Two gaps shape any Shopify store set up from Kenya. Shopify Payments isn't available to Kenyan stores, so every sale clears through an outside payment provider, and neither the Shopify admin nor its checkout supports Swahili.
Neither gap is a reason to avoid Shopify. Both are reasons to hire someone who has handled them before. The Shopify experts for Kenya listed here run their businesses from other countries and count African merchants among their clients. Kenya-based experts are still scarce on shopexperts, so this page points you to people who can do the work from elsewhere.
A store priced in shillings with an English checkout is a perfectly workable starting point. Most of the expert's effort goes into the payment connection, the tax rates and making the storefront read well for your customers.
Write down what you sell, how you want to be paid and when you want to launch, then ask the experts below for a quote.

Remote Shopify experts for Kenya: how to hire one well
Right now the directory has almost no one based in Kenya itself. Instead of an empty page, you get agencies and freelancers from outside the country who accept African projects. Whoever you hire this way is a remote partner, and the contract should say so.
Four things belong in writing before any work starts.
Hours of overlap. Agree the hours each weekday when the expert is online and replying. Launch needs more than that, so ask who picks up urgent issues in the evening and at weekends.
Currency and payment terms. You'll sell in shillings; the expert will probably invoice in dollars, pounds or euros. Name the currency in the contract, agree who absorbs exchange-rate swings, and release money against finished milestones.
Ownership. Sign up for Shopify, the domain, the payment provider and every paid app in your own name, so the money from every sale lands in accounts only you control. Then invite the expert as staff, and never let a contractor hold the store owner login.
Proof from your market. Ask for a store the expert built or maintains that sells to customers in Kenya, and ask how they handled its English-only checkout. If they have none, a store elsewhere in Africa running on a third-party payment provider is the next best thing. You'll learn more from that than from a case study written for European brands.
Questions, a paid trial and a brief for a Kenyan launch
Portfolios all look good. What separates experts for a Kenyan store is how they handle the parts Shopify doesn't do for you there.
Interview on specifics. Ask how they'd present the checkout to customers who would rather read Swahili, given Shopify's checkout doesn't offer it. Ask which third-party payment providers they've connected and what went wrong the first time. Ask how prices in shillings will show on product pages, in the cart and in order emails. An expert who answers with examples has done it; one who answers with promises hasn't.
Run a paid trial. Pick a job worth a day or two: connect the payment provider on a development store and complete a test purchase, or rewrite the theme's cart and product page text for your customers. Pay for it properly. You're testing their questions, updates and deadlines as much as the result.
Brief for Kenya specifically. Spell out:
- the payment provider you want and the status of your account with them
- which storefront text you'd like in Swahili, if any, and who will write it
- where you deliver, and whether you sell beyond Kenya
- how many products you have and where that data lives today
- your budget range and target launch date
Kenyan store set-up: payments, shillings, tax and language
A Kenya-based store breaks from the usual Shopify set-up in four places, and each one lands on your expert's task list.
A third-party payment provider. Kenya is outside the countries Shopify Payments serves. Shopify's documentation steers Kenyan stores towards outside providers, so the choice, the connection and the testing all sit with you and your expert. Plan prices in Kenyan shillings (KES) from the start, and confirm the provider supports them.
Manual Tax, nothing automatic. For Kenya, Shopify offers Manual Tax and nothing else; neither Shopify Tax nor Basic Tax is on the menu. The rates you charge are the rates someone typed in. A third-party tax app can manage them if you prefer. Either way, decide now who on your side updates the rates once the expert has gone, or hand the job to a tax setup expert.
English admin and checkout. Shopify supports English in both, but not Swahili. Staff will work in English and customers will check out in English. A good expert will ask how much of the storefront you want in Swahili and be straight about which parts of the buying journey can follow.
Hardware from independent sellers. If you sell in person, Shopify won't post its own POS kit to Kenyan addresses. Kenyan merchants buy compatible devices from independent sellers instead, so run each model past your expert before you spend anything.
Common set-up jobs for a Kenyan Shopify store
These are the jobs that bring most stores selling from Kenya to an outside expert:
Third-party payment set-up
Provider chosen, connected and tested with real shilling orders
Storefront language
An English checkout, with theme copy written for Kenyan shoppers
Tax rate configuration
Manual Tax rates entered, checked and kept up to date
Selling across borders
Shipping zones and currencies for customers outside Kenya
Moving to Shopify
Catalogue, customers and URLs migrated from your current platform
POS for physical shops
Compatible hardware bought from third-party sellers and set up
Outside help for a Kenyan store, answered
There's no Kenyan price band on shopexperts — with so few experts based in the country, any figure would mislead. Ask instead for three line items you can weigh separately: the payment provider connection, the theme and catalogue work, and any Swahili storefront copy. The provider line is the one most worth checking against a second quote, because it's the job Shopify can't do for you in Kenya.
Adding products, writing pages and choosing a theme are within most founders' reach. Bring in help for the payment provider connection, changes to theme code and anything involving data from an old platform. A simple test: if a mistake would stop customers paying or lose order history, pay someone who has done it before.
Count the workstreams. A store priced in shillings with an English checkout and a finished brand is usually one freelancer's job. Add Swahili storefront copy, a migration and launch marketing, and you're running three projects at once; that's when an agency's co-ordination earns its fee. A middle route also works: a freelancer for the build and a separate writer for the Swahili text.
The slowest step is often outside the expert's hands: getting your payment provider account approved. Start that application before you hire anyone. Once it's through, the timeline depends on catalogue size and theme changes. A good expert will give you a date for each milestone in writing rather than a single launch date.
Give staff access with only the permissions the job needs. Someone fixing the theme doesn't need payouts or customer exports. Check which apps they plan to install and who pays for them. Keep a dated list of everyone with access, so removing people at the end takes minutes.
