You'll mostly be choosing between teams, so judge them on who will work on your account, not on the logo wall on their website. Ask for the names and roles of the people who'll build your store, and whether any of it is subcontracted.

English only, and that's usually fine. All 14 list English, and none lists another language. For a store selling in English, that's no limitation. Afrikaans or Zulu content would mean sourcing writers separately, so list it as its own budget line rather than expecting an agency to absorb it.
Content is a strength. Copywriting and content appears on 9 profiles and marketing and growth on 10. Store setup and management is on all 14, Shopify development on 12 and consulting and strategy on 8. Design, UX and branding is the thinnest at 6, so look hard at portfolios if the brand starts from scratch.
How the listing runs. The listing puts South Africa-based experts first, then adds specialists elsewhere who accept work from merchants in Africa. Those profiles matter mostly for the gaps covered below.
For most South African stores a local agency is the sensible default. Look further down the page when the job is small, design-led or tax-heavy.
You only need one person. With a single freelancer on the local list, a small fixed job, such as a theme fix, a product import or connecting a payment provider, may cost less with a freelancer from further down the page than with an agency's minimum engagement.
Design carries the project. Design, UX and branding is the smallest category on local profiles. If the brand is the point of the rebuild, put one designer from the wider list next to your local agencies.
Tax set-up is complicated. No local profile lists finance, taxes and compliance. A specialist from further down can review the rates your agency enters, which is cheap insurance on a store where every rate is set by hand.
For a store selling at home, start local. South Africa-based agencies share your working day and can meet in person, and you can ask for a contract in rand. That combination is hard to beat.
A rand store runs on an outside gateway. Shopify Payments isn't available to businesses based in South Africa, and Shopify's docs direct them to a third-party payment provider. Your store prices in South African rand. Ask your expert to set the shortlisted providers against each other on fees, payout schedule and the payment options shoppers will see, then prove the choice with paid, refunded and failed test orders.
You own the tax rates. South Africa gets Manual Tax only in Shopify's help centre. With no Shopify Tax or Basic Tax option, the merchant sets the rates, or installs a third-party tax app that does it for them. Have your expert record each rate, where it lives in the admin, and the date it was set.
English yes; Afrikaans and Zulu no. Shopify supports English in both the admin and checkout for South African stores. Neither Afrikaans nor Zulu is supported in either place. If you want customers to read your store in those languages, ask your expert what's possible before you commission any copy.
POS hardware is a sourcing job. Shopify's hardware shop doesn't deliver to South Africa. Supported devices come through third-party retailers, so your expert should check every model against Shopify's compatibility list before you buy, and factor delivery time into the opening date.

South African profiles haven't yet listed enough starting prices for a fair range here. Request three numbers instead: a fixed build price, a separate content figure, and an hourly or retainer rate for changes after launch. With copywriting on 9 local profiles, ask whether content is already in the price. Splitting it out makes two agency proposals easy to set side by side.
Yes, but plan it like a small project. Switching touches checkout, rand payouts, refunds on orders taken through the old provider and any subscriptions you run. Pick a provider you can live with for a few years, and ask your agency to document the current set-up so a future switch doesn't start from guesswork.
Yes, though each new market adds currency, duty, shipping and language decisions to a store built around rand. Check that your payment provider accepts the currencies and cards you'll see from abroad, and ask your agency for live examples of cross-border stores before you add markets. Launch at home first unless most of your demand is already overseas.
Product count, the payment provider you're considering, whether prices are in rand only, the customers you're targeting, the content you need written, who maintains tax rates, and your launch date. Add three stores you like and say why. Agencies can price that kind of brief properly, and their quotes will line up.
Which stores they've launched on a third-party payment provider, who on their team will do the work, how they handle tax rates they don't own, and what happens if your main contact leaves. Then call one client reference. Agencies that answer those plainly tend to run projects plainly too.
