Shopify Experts for Uruguay-Based Stores
Most Shopify work for a Uruguayan store can happen from anywhere. What separates a useful remote hire from a risky one is whether they've built a store that takes pesos without Shopify Payments, which isn't offered in Uruguay, and with tax rates entered by hand.
Too few Shopify experts in Uruguay have joined shopexperts so far to fill a list of their own. The listing below shows remote experts instead: based in other countries, and working with merchants across Latin America.
That isn't a compromise. A remote expert with the right references usually beats a nearby one without them, provided you check those references properly and test the expert on something small first.
Pick two or three profiles, send each the same short brief, and ask for a fixed-price quote.

What this page lists for Uruguay, and how to hire across borders
No local shortlist yet. Experts based in Uruguay are still scarce on shopexperts, and this page doesn't pretend otherwise. The listing shows experts based in other countries who take on Latin American clients, so every hire you make from it is a remote one.
Next door shares your clock. Argentina and Brazil have their own pages, linked at the foot of this one, with experts based in those countries. An expert in Buenos Aires or São Paulo keeps the same hours as Montevideo, which helps when something breaks on launch day. Sharing a clock doesn't mean they've built a Uruguayan checkout, though, so check references the same way.
References from a store like yours. The best predictor of a good result is a store the expert has already set up that sells in Uruguay. Failing that, look for one with the same constraints: a third-party payment provider, manual tax rates and a Spanish checkout. Ask for the URL and place a test order as far as the payment page to see how it handles pesos.
A contract in one currency. Your store sells in Uruguayan pesos; the person you hire might bill in their own currency. Settle the contract currency up front, along with who pays transfer fees, so the final invoice matches the quote you accepted.
Accounts in your name. You create the store and the provider account yourself, then grant the expert staff access. If the relationship ends, you remove one user rather than negotiating to get your own store back.
Testing a remote Shopify expert on a small, paid job
The cheapest insurance against a bad remote hire is one small job, paid in full, before the big one.
Pick a task with a visible result. Good trial jobs for a Uruguayan store: linking your payment provider to a test store and pushing a payment through in pesos, entering your tax rates and checking totals on three test orders, or translating the full checkout flow into Spanish. Each is small, and you can check the result yourself.
Watch how they work, not just what they deliver. Did they ask questions before quoting? Did they flag a problem early or sit on it until the deadline? Did the handover note explain what changed? Those habits carry straight into the full project.
Ask three questions before the trial. Which payment providers have they connected for stores in this region? How will they handle tax when Shopify only offers Manual Tax in Uruguay? And what will they test before telling you it's done?
Then brief the full job properly. Include your products and catalogue size, which provider takes payments, any in-person selling, the store's currency and language, and any countries you ship to beyond Uruguay. A remote expert can't guess local defaults, so spell them out.
Who handles what in a Uruguayan Shopify set-up
Some of Uruguay's set-up is yours to decide; the rest is a job for your expert. Split it that way and nothing falls between you.
You choose the payment provider; the expert connects it. Uruguayan stores can't use Shopify Payments, which leaves checkout to an outside payment provider. You pick it, based on fees and the payment methods your customers expect, and apply for the account. Your expert connects it, sets the store currency to the Uruguayan peso (UYU) and tests a payment and a refund.
Your accountant sets the tax rates; the expert enters them. Uruguay gets Manual Tax only on Shopify, with no Shopify Tax or Basic Tax, so the platform charges what's entered and nothing more. The expert configures the rates, checks order totals and, if you want automation, can set up a third-party tax app instead.
You buy the POS hardware; the expert checks it first. Shopify doesn't deliver its own POS hardware to Uruguay. Before you order a card reader or receipt printer from a third-party retailer, have the expert check the model is one Shopify supports.
You pick the language; the expert finishes it. The admin and checkout both come in Spanish. Once you've chosen Spanish, the expert should translate anything you've customised: checkout fields, shipping notes and edited order emails.
Set-up work worth hiring out for a Uruguayan store
These are the jobs where a Uruguayan store gets the most from a few days of expert time:
Connecting a payment provider
A third-party provider set up and tested in Uruguayan pesos
Entering and testing tax rates
Manual rates from your accountant, checked on real orders
Shipping beyond Uruguay
Zones, rates and prices for customers in other countries
Spanish storefront and emails
Custom checkout text, policies and notifications translated
Moving from another platform
Products, customers and redirects carried over to Shopify
In-store selling
Supported POS hardware confirmed before you buy it
Shopify experts for Uruguay: what merchants ask
It depends on how much coordination the job needs. An agency bundles design, development and someone managing the timeline into a single contract, which helps on a full launch or a migration. A freelancer is usually quicker and cheaper for a contained job such as a payment provider integration. Either way, ask who covers when your main contact is unavailable, because you can't walk round to their office.
This page shows no price range: experts based in Uruguay are too scarce for a fair one. Get two or three fixed-price quotes against the same brief, in the same currency, and ask each what's excluded: content entry, app costs and post-launch fixes are the usual gaps. Pay a deposit up front and release the rest as each stage goes live in your store.
Rarely at launch. Most of the work is configuration: the payment provider, peso pricing, manual tax rates and a Spanish checkout. If someone proposes custom code, ask why an existing app and a few settings won't do, and agree who maintains it when Shopify or your theme changes. For genuinely custom features, shortlist experts whose profiles list Shopify Development and who can show work they've shipped.
You. The account holds your revenue, so it belongs in your business's name. A good expert will advise on providers that suit a store selling in Uruguayan pesos and tell you what each needs from you, but the application, and the approval wait that follows, is yours. Start it early; the store can be finished long before it can take a real payment.
Quite a lot. You'll need shipping zones and rates for each destination, a decision on which currencies to show, translated content, such as Portuguese if Brazil is on the list, and confirmation that your payment provider accepts foreign cards. Scope it separately from the core build. International expansion experts handle this as a dedicated job.
