I have over five years of experience in web development using technologies such as Shopify, Angular, Node.js, JavaScript, React, Vue, MongoDB, MySQL, and PHP. My journey with Shopify started when I joined Hey Carson, now known as 'Shop Experts', successfully completing their trial period. I have gained significant experience in Shopify development. I've worked in complex tasks such as integrating Shopify apps, Shopify Admin API, custom design development, apps extensions development, theme development and much more. Over the past few years, I've acquired what I believe is a solid understanding of Shopify development, which helps me deliver high-quality solutions to the clients I've worked with.

What gets built inside the Bold Subscriptions app
Most of the paid work on Bold Subscriptions is developer work. The settings cover a lot, but the jobs merchants pay for usually sit at the edges: the theme, the portal, and the systems that receive subscription orders.
Offer design. Choosing between standard, prepaid and convertible subscriptions, then setting them up so the product, discount and frequency are right on the first order and every renewal. Convertible offers, where the initial product switches to another on later orders, need the most testing.
The product-page widget. On Online Store 2.0 themes, Bold's widget goes in as an app block that you place and style in the theme editor. Older themes need a manual install, which is where a developer earns their fee.
The customer portal. Bold's portal is fully customisable. Experts restyle it to match the store and decide what subscribers can change without contacting support.
Keeping subscribers. Setting up cancellation flows and Bold's automatic dunning for failed payments, so a declined card doesn't quietly end a subscription.
Integrations. Bold's APIs and webhooks connect subscription events to an ERP, a 3PL or a helpdesk. Shopify Flow handles lighter automation, such as tagging subscription orders as they come in.
Add-ons. Subscription upsells and VIP pricing come from Bold's separate upsell and custom pricing apps. Worth asking whether your candidate has set those up alongside subscriptions.
Migration QA. Bold runs white-glove migrations into the app itself. An independent expert checks the result before customers notice anything.
Vetting a developer for Bold Subscriptions
Subscription bugs surface weeks later, on the renewal, so you're hiring for care as much as skill. Judge candidates on how they test, not on how fast they build.
Start with your theme. Tell candidates which theme you run and ask how they'd place the widget. On an Online Store 2.0 theme the answer is the app block. A plan to hand-code the widget there is a warning sign. On an older theme, ask how they'll keep the manual install from breaking at the next theme update.
Ask how they test renewals. A good answer covers a test subscription through checkout, a forced renewal, a portal change and a failed payment. If they only check the first order, keep looking.
Ask about the Shop app. Anyone who has built convertible offers on Bold should know the Shop app issue described below without being prompted.
Ask what's current. Bold's original V1 ran on a separate checkout and is gone. Someone describing that set-up as current hasn't worked on Bold recently.
For a first paid task, ask for an audit of one live product from widget to second renewal, with a written list of what breaks. It costs little and shows you exactly how they work.
Bold Subscriptions Shopify notes: checkout, themes and the Shop app
One checkout only. Bold's migration guide gives 18 October 2024 as the end of life for Bold Subscriptions V1, the version that used its own separate checkout. The current product is Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout, and Bold states full support for checkout extensibility. A store still carrying V1-era theme code or instructions needs a clean-up before any new build.
Online Store 2.0 or manual. The subscription widget app block works only on Online Store 2.0 themes. Vintage themes get a manual install instead, and that code needs checking after every theme update.
The Shop app skips Bold's widget. Shopify's Shop app has its own subscription widget, and it doesn't use Bold's convert attribute. A customer who subscribes through the Shop app to a convertible offer can stay on the initial product, even a fully discounted one, and keep receiving it free. Bold's fix is to hide those initial products from the Shop sales channel. A good expert checks this on day one.
Tag subscription orders in Flow. Bold documents a simple Shopify Flow workflow that runs on the Order created trigger and adds order tags to subscription orders. Fulfilment, reporting and customer service all benefit from knowing which orders are renewals.
Fees on every plan. Bold charges a monthly fee plus a transaction fee on every plan, and the transaction fee still applies during the trial. Factor that into whether a custom feature is worth building.

Questions about the Bold subscription app and hiring
Yes. Bold offers a 30-day free trial on all paid plans, and the transaction fee still applies during it. The plans are Launch, Grow and Scale, with Enterprise listed on Bold's own site. Use the trial to test one real subscription product end to end before paying an expert for a full build.
Bold offers white-glove migration into the app. That still leaves work for you or an expert: checking that each subscriber landed on the right product, frequency and price, that portal logins work, and that the first renewals after the move go through cleanly. Plan that check before the switch date, not after customers start emailing.
Yes, if you want those features. Bold sells subscription upsells through its upsell app and VIP pricing through its custom pricing app, separately from Bold Subscriptions. Ask your expert whether the extra app earns its place, and whether the same person can configure all of them together.
Usually standard: the same product on a set schedule. Prepaid suits customers who pay once for several deliveries, and works well as a gift. Convertible earns its extra testing when the first order differs from the refills, such as a starter kit followed by top-ups, and it needs the Shop app check covered above. Launch one type, watch two renewals go through, then add the next.
Yes. Four of the five profiles list Spanish alongside English, and two of the five are based in Argentina. One profile also lists Bulgarian. That helps stores selling in Spanish-speaking markets, where portal text and widget labels need checking in the customer's language.
