Shopify API Integration Developers
Your store's data rarely lives only in Shopify. Orders need to reach a warehouse system, sales need to land in a data warehouse, and stock may come from a marketplace or a tool your team built years ago.
A Shopify API integration is custom code that moves that data, using Shopify's Admin API (the interface for reading and writing products, orders and customers) and webhooks (instant notices when something changes). It is not installing an app that already connects two platforms; if one exists and fits, that is a cheaper app integration job. ERP connections are a specialism of their own, handled by ERP integration specialists.
Compare the developers and agencies below, and brief them with a list of the data that has to move, in which direction and how often.

I'm Phil, a senior Shopify developer with over 12 years' experience in Web Development and the last 6 building and refining storefronts for e-commerce brands in Shopify. My core stack is JavaScript and TypeScript, with deep expertise in Liquid and Online Store 2.0 theme development, from fully custom builds to extending and modernising existing themes. Most of my work sits where themes, apps and data meet: moving app integrations onto App Blocks, untangling script conflicts, and making sure GA4 and Klaviyo tracking is correct. I work regularly with Klaviyo, Recharge, Rebuy, Algolia and Judge.me, and I focus on performance and conversion: Core Web Vitals, product page clarity and mobile UX. As more stores are edited with Shopify Sidekick, Canvas, ChatGPT or Cursor, I review and repair AI-generated theme code: a written list of what is broken or risky, fixes on a development theme, and checks that app blocks, tracking and theme updates still work afterwards. I work in small, reversible steps: build and review on a development theme, preserve existing customisations, and publish only after sign-off. I'm comfortable owning a project end to end or providing senior cover inside an existing team.

How to hire a Shopify integration developer
Integrations get judged on the day something breaks, which is rarely the day you hire. Hire for failure handling, not for the demo.
Map the data flows before the first call. For each type of data (products, inventory, orders, customers, refunds), note which system it starts in, where it has to go, how quickly, and roughly how many records a day. One page like this turns vague quotes into comparable ones.
Ask what happens when the other system is down. Good answers mention queues, automatic retries and a way to replay failed records. "It just syncs" is not an answer.
Ask to see a failure alert from a past project. Every integration fails at some point. You want someone who can show you the alert their last client received, not only a working sync.
Ask how they test before go-live. A careful developer builds against a development store and a test copy of the other system, using realistic data volumes, before touching your live store. A plan to build straight against production gambles with real orders.
Check who will write the code. Most of the 541 listings for this service on shopexperts are full-service agencies imported from partner directories, and few have claimed their profiles: of the first 100, 89 were agencies and 7 were claimed in September 2026. Ask who does the build and when they last worked with Shopify's GraphQL Admin API, the current version of its main data interface.
Walk away from these. No mention of API rate limits. Credentials stored in someone's personal account. A quote for building with nothing for monitoring. And a plan to "sync everything both ways", which usually means nobody has decided which system is right.
What makes a Shopify API integration reliable?
Five decisions separate an integration you forget about from one you babysit.
One source of truth per data type. Product content might start in a PIM (product information management system), stock in the warehouse system and orders in Shopify. Each field gets exactly one owner. Two-way sync on the same field creates loops and silent overwrites.
Direction and frequency. Stock on fast-selling products needs near-real-time updates; a nightly export to a reporting database does not. Faster sync costs more to build and run, so match speed to the damage a delay would cause.
Webhooks with a safety net. Webhooks tell the integration the moment an order is created, but Shopify doesn't guarantee that every webhook arrives, or arrives in order. Pair them with a scheduled reconciliation job that polls for anything missed.
Rate limits. Shopify caps how fast any app can call its API, with higher limits on Shopify Plus. Large catalogue loads belong in bulk operations — Shopify's method for running big imports and exports in the background — rather than thousands of single calls.
Retries, alerts and a named person. Failed records should retry automatically, then land in a queue someone can see. Decide now who is told when a sync fails at 2am, and what they are expected to do about it.
How much do Shopify integration services cost?
Integration pricing depends on how many systems are involved, which way the data flows and how much can go wrong. Typical market ranges:
Simple integration
$3,000 – $15,000
One system, one direction, standard data
Complex integration
$15,000 – $150,000+
Two-way sync, middleware, error handling
Integration engineer
$110 – $250
Per hour
A one-way order export to a warehouse system sits at the low end. Two-way stock and order sync through middleware (a separate service between the systems that queues data and handles errors), with custom field mapping and alerting, moves into five or six figures. Older systems without a modern API cost more, because someone has to build a bridge on their side too.
Put running costs in the budget from day one: middleware hosting, monitoring, and upgrades as Shopify retires older API versions. Attach your data-flow map, with daily record volumes, when you request a quote.
What does Shopify API development cover?
Most integration projects combine a few of these:
Inventory and order sync
Stock and orders kept in step with warehouse systems
Marketplace connections
Listings, orders and stock shared with other sales channels
Reporting feeds
Orders, customers and products sent to a data warehouse
Middleware builds
A service between systems that queues, maps and retries data
Webhook automations
Real-time jobs triggered by orders, refunds and customer updates
Integration rescue
Audits and fixes for syncs that drop or duplicate records
Frequently asked questions about Shopify integration projects
Match it to what happens after launch. A freelancer suits a single one-way flow with low stakes, such as a nightly reporting export. An agency suits multi-system projects, middleware and anything where a failed sync costs money within hours, because you need cover when one person is unavailable. Either way, ask who is on call and put response times in the contract.
Often a little of both. Most integrations connect through a custom app installed on your store, because that is how Shopify issues API credentials and permissions. The difference is purpose: an integration moves data between systems with little or no interface, while an app gives your team screens and features inside Shopify. If you need both, brief them as one project so the data model is designed once.
Simple one-way integrations can ship in a few weeks. Two-way projects with middleware typically run 8 to 20 weeks, and the other system usually sets the pace: how good its API is, whether a test environment exists, and how quickly its owners answer questions. Thin or outdated documentation on the other side is a common reason estimates slip, so ask the developer to read it before committing to dates.
Usually. If your system has an API, a developer can connect to it directly. If it only exports files, a scheduled file transfer with validation works well for data that doesn't need to move in real time. If it has neither, the integration can read its database through middleware, which works but needs care so nothing on the in-house side breaks. Ask the developer to review your system's documentation before quoting.
It is if access is set up properly. Each integration should run as its own app with only the permissions it needs, such as reading orders without editing products. Credentials belong in your company's accounts, not a developer's personal one, and should be rotated when people leave. A separate app per integration also means you can switch one off without breaking the others.
A data-flow diagram, a field mapping document showing which system owns each field, and a runbook explaining what each alert means and how to replay failed records. Add credentials and hosting in your accounts, access to the code repository, and a short recorded walkthrough. Without these, the next developer spends their first weeks reverse-engineering the integration at your expense.
