Shopify Translate and Adapt Help: Language Review and Setup

Shopify Translate and Adapt is Shopify's own free app for translating your store into the languages you sell in, and for adapting wording to markets that share a language. It installs automatically when you add a language. Automatic translation covers 2 languages for most stores, or up to 8 for stores based in a set of European countries. Read Shopify's listing for the app . Machine output gets words onto the page. Merchants bring in help for what follows: a fluent review before a language goes live, legal policies translated by hand, theme and app text the editor doesn't reach, translated URL handles, and cleanup after switching from another translation app. If no profile in the listing below suits the job, the Markets localization and international expansion specialists linked further down take on the same translation setup. A useful first message names your default language, the languages you plan to publish, your theme, and the country your store is registered in, because that country sets your auto-translation allowance.

I'm a Shopify developer with years of hands-on experience building and scaling e-commerce stores — from custom theme development to conversion rate optimization and third-party integrations. I've worked with brands like Après Nail and through platforms like Storetasker, delivering solutions that look great and perform even better. I specialize in Liquid programming, frontend development, and UI/UX enhancement. Whether you need a full theme build, a tricky app integration, or a speed and SEO overhaul, I bring a detail-oriented approach that gets results — not just code. I leverage AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot throughout my workflow — drafting Liquid logic faster, QA-testing edge cases, and generating content-ready section structures. This means faster turnaround, fewer revisions, and more value for your budget. My background spans custom store builds, GA4 + GTM tracking setups, Klaviyo integrations, loyalty app configurations, A/B testing, and cross-functional collaboration with design and marketing teams. I treat every project like it's my own store on the line. I'm a Computer Software Engineering graduate and Growth Collective certified in Creative Website Design (Shopify). Let's build something that converts.

Shopify Specialist | Store Design, Development & Optimisation I'm Michael Thomas, the founder of Michael Thomas Media, an independent Shopify consultancy helping businesses build, improve and grow their online stores. I've spent over a decade working with Shopify, beginning my career at Shopify itself before spending six years working with premium Shopify themes, supporting merchants worldwide and leading a theme support team. Today, I work directly with businesses to create beautiful, high-performing Shopify stores that are easy to manage, built to convert and designed for long-term growth. How I can help Shopify Store Design & Redesign — Creating modern, professional storefronts using carefully selected premium Shopify themes. Theme Setup & Customisation — Tailoring existing themes to your brand, improving layouts and creating better shopping experiences. Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) — Identifying opportunities to improve navigation, product discovery, usability and conversions. Shopify SEO & Technical Optimisation — Improving site structure, metadata, structured data, internal linking and technical SEO. Store Performance & Speed — Identifying performance bottlenecks and improving storefront efficiency. Shopify Troubleshooting — Resolving theme issues, app conflicts, bugs and unexpected storefront behaviour. Store Migrations & Setup — Helping businesses launch on Shopify or transition from another platform. Ongoing Shopify Support — Providing reliable assistance, maintenance, training and practical recommendations. Experience that goes beyond theme customisation I've worked with everything from brand-new businesses launching their first Shopify store to established retailers managing thousands of products and more than 150,000 orders. My background in Shopify theme support means I understand how themes work behind the scenes, how different apps and integrations interact, and how to identify problems without introducing unnecessary complexity. I focus on practical improvements that make a measurable difference, rather than recommending expensive rebuilds or additional apps when simpler solutions will do. Let's improve your Shopify store Whether you're launching a new business, redesigning an existing store or trying to solve a frustrating technical issue, I'd be happy to help. Where a translation specialist earns the fee

Adding a language takes minutes. Making it read like your own store in that language takes longer.

A fluent pass before publishing. Shopify tells merchants to review automatic translations for accuracy before they go live. A native speaker works through product titles, collections and the cart path in the side-by-side editor. Their edits stick, because automatic translation never changes text you added or edited manually.

Policies done by hand. Legal policies can't be translated automatically, so refund, privacy and terms pages need a human translation in every published language.

Market-specific wording. Adaptations change spelling, messaging, images or logos for one market that shares a language with another. They depend on a market plan, which Markets localization specialists usually set up first.

Handles that read well. URL handles can be translated, though not per market, and the word "products" in the path stays as it is. Settle handles with someone who does Shopify SEO before Google indexes the new language.

Theme and app strings. Third-party themes need checking with their developer, custom themes need the routes Liquid object for internal links, and app text only translates if the app stores it as a Shopify translatable resource.

Bulk edits by CSV. Email templates, metafields, filters and shop policies don't show in the app's search. Shopify points to CSV export for those.

Doing it yourself. One extra language, a free Shopify theme and a colleague who speaks it well: that store rarely needs a paid hire.

How to brief someone on the Translate & Adapt app

Language skill and Shopify skill rarely come in one person. Decide which of the two you are paying for, then test for it.

Ask who reads the output. A good answer names a native speaker per language and a short glossary for product terms that must stay consistent. "The AI handles it" is not a review process.

Ask about your allowance. They should know the auto-translation cap depends on the country your store is in, that removing a language doesn't free a slot, and that an automatic translation can't be moved to another language. Choosing the wrong language spends an allowance you won't get back.

Ask how URLs will look. Expect a view on subfolders or subdomains, translated handles, and redirects if handles change after launch.

Ask what the app leaves out. Tags, collection filters, product images, manual payment instructions and Shopify Forms content sit outside it. Someone who knows that list prices the workarounds up front.

Hold back on any quote promising every theme and app string translated before anyone has checked which of your apps use the Translations API.

A small paid start. One collection and its products translated and reviewed in one language, with a note on each term they changed and why.

Shopify Translate and Adapt limitations to plan for

The auto-translation cap follows your address. Stores in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or the UK can auto-translate up to 8 languages beyond the default. Elsewhere the cap is 2, unless the app shows a "Translate now" button for your store.

Auto-sync is regional. Where offered, it retranslates a language weekly. It is off by default, set per language, and its first run waits for the next weekly slot. Other stores click Auto-translate again after content changes.

Theme text only fills gaps. For theme default text, missing translations are added and existing ones are left alone.

Your plan sets the language count. Basic, Grow, Shopify and Advanced allow up to 20 languages. Plus allows up to 30.

Not every language works. Shopify lists 14 incompatible languages, among them Tagalog, Latin and Haitian Creole.

Default SEO fields follow the product. Product meta titles and descriptions left on default settings pull from the translated title and description.

Uninstalling keeps everything. Translations stay in the store after removal. Delete them in the app first, or later through a CSV export and import.

Shopify Translate and Adapt app: merchant questions

Is the Shopify Translate and Adapt app free?

Yes. As of October 2026 the App Store lists it as free, with no paid tiers. Manual translations aren't capped. The limit sits on automatic translation: 2 languages for most stores and up to 8 for stores in the listed European countries. The real cost is the time of a fluent reviewer for each language you publish.

How do I get more languages auto-translated?

Check your country first. Stores in the listed European countries, or any store where the app shows "Translate now", get up to 8 languages and Auto-sync. Removing a language doesn't reset the count. Past your allowance, languages are translated manually, imported by CSV, or handled by a compatible third-party app that uses the Translations API.

Will Translate & Adapt cover my theme and app text?

Partly. Free Shopify themes support multiple languages, though some need an update. Third-party themes should be checked with the developer. App text translates only when the app stores it as a translatable resource type or storefront locale file. Tags, product images and collection filters sit outside the app entirely.

Do I need a developer for Translate & Adapt?

Not for a free Shopify theme and a modest catalog, where the work is translation and review. A developer earns the fee on a custom theme without the routes Liquid object, on bulk CSV changes, or on app content missing from the editor. For most stores a fluent reviewer matters more than a coder.

What happens to translations if I remove the app?

They stay in the store. Shopify says translations and generated content aren't deleted on uninstall, so delete them in the app first or clear them afterward with a CSV export and import. Translations made in a compatible third-party app also appear inside Translate & Adapt, so plan a switch before content is duplicated.
