Find the Best Shopify Experts in Japan
Start a Japanese Shopify store with the tax settings, not the theme. A store based here gets neither Shopify Tax nor Basic Tax, and Shopify's Japan guide says prices must include tax. Set prices up wrong at launch and every product in the catalogue needs fixing later.
As of October 2026, 5 Shopify experts in Japan have a profile on shopexperts. All five are agencies, and every one of them takes on store setup and management. There are no freelancers based in Japan on the list yet, so the local option suits launches and rebuilds better than a two-hour fix.
Three of the five list Japanese alongside English. Read their profiles, then request quotes against one brief that names who will write the Japanese copy.

Five agencies, no freelancers: what Japan's list is built for
All five are agencies. No Japan-based freelancers list on shopexperts at the moment. The local option suits multi-week projects with a team behind them, and it's a poor fit for a single theme tweak.
Not all in Tokyo. Profiles name Tokyo, Fukuoka and Wakayama. Where your business sits in Japan rarely matters, because Shopify work happens in the admin rather than on site. Location does matter for a retail rollout, where somebody has to stand at the counter and test the POS.
Japanese narrows the shortlist. Every profile lists English. Japanese appears on three, with Spanish and French on one each. A Japanese team that runs the admin day to day should shortlist from those three. An overseas brand opening a Japan store can brief any of them in English, but somebody still has to own the Japanese copy.
The bench leans towards setup and build. Store setup and management appears on all five profiles. Consulting and strategy and Shopify development appear on three each, marketing and growth on two. Design, UX and branding shows up once, as does copywriting and content. If your project is mainly a brand-led redesign, your strongest candidate may sit further down the page.
After Japan's five. The local agencies come first. Beneath them sit specialists based outside Japan who accept Asian clients, freelancers among them. Check their reachable hours and Japanese ability before treating them as equal options.
When a Japan-based agency earns its fee, and when it doesn't
The page gives you two pools: the five local agencies and the regional list below them. Choose by what the job touches, not by where the expert sits.
Stay local for anything tied to Japanese tax or language. Tax-inclusive prices, consumption tax entered by hand, product pages and order emails that read naturally in Japanese — this is where an agency that already runs Japanese stores earns its fee. Ask each one to open a live store they built for a Japan-based merchant and walk you through its tax settings on a call.
Go regional for narrow technical work. A broken app integration, a slow collection page or a custom product filter rarely needs knowledge of Japan. A regional developer can handle it without agency overhead. Write the brief in English, state the hours you need them reachable, and keep the scope tight enough to price as one fixed job.
Ignore the things that don't predict a good result. Office address, headcount and the number of apps an agency claims to partner with tell you very little. Whether they have shipped a Japan-based store with correct tax-inclusive prices tells you a lot.
Whichever pool you pick from, the brief decides the quality of the quote. Include your SKU count, the platform you're leaving, your sales channels, whether you sell in person, and who will write the Japanese copy.
Consumption tax, yen payouts and a Japanese checkout
Most of what makes a Japanese Shopify store different lives in a handful of settings. A good expert raises them in the first call, before anyone opens the theme editor.
Payouts arrive in yen. Japan-based stores can use Shopify Payments, which pays out in JPY. Your expert should switch it on early, check the business and bank details match your company, and push a real order through before launch day.
Tax is manual, and it sits inside the price. Japan isn't a Shopify Tax or a Basic Tax region, so consumption tax is configured through Manual Tax. Shopify's Japan guide covers location-based taxes and requires tax-inclusive pricing. In practice, every price in your catalogue is the price the customer pays, and the tax settings must calculate tax within it rather than adding it at checkout.
Ask for a test order whose totals your accountant has checked. If you want a specialist for this part, look at Shopify tax setup experts.
POS kit comes from retailers. Japan sits outside the delivery area of Shopify's hardware store, and Shopify directs Japanese merchants to outside retailers for compatible kit. Before you buy a card reader or printer for in-person sales, your expert should confirm the model appears among Shopify's supported devices.
Japanese works end to end. Both the Shopify admin and the checkout are available in Japanese: your staff can manage orders in it and your customers can complete payment in it. The gaps are usually the theme and any apps you add, which carry their own text and need checking page by page.
What Japan's five agencies cover
Store setup is on all five profiles; design and copywriting are on one each. An agency can tick several categories, so the figures add up to more than five.
Store setup and management
All five offer it — launches, rebuilds and store admin
Consulting and strategy
Three offer planning, audits and market-entry advice
Shopify development
Three take on custom theme work and integrations
Marketing and growth
Two cover traffic, email and conversion work
Design, UX and branding
On a single profile, level with copywriting as the thinnest category
Copywriting and content
Also on a single profile, so settle early who writes the Japanese copy
Japanese stores, tax and agencies: what to ask before hiring
Not locally: every Japan-based expert on shopexperts is an agency. That suits a launch, a replatform or a build that needs design, development and Japanese copy running in parallel. If you have one clearly defined task and someone in-house to manage it, look at the freelancers in the regional part of the list and keep the scope to a single fixed-price job.
Too few Japan-based profiles list a starting price for this page to show a range, and we won't guess one. The quote moves with catalogue size, any migration from another platform, how much Japanese copy needs writing, and whether you also sell in person. Ask for a fixed-scope quote with tax setup and translation shown as separate lines. If an agency won't split them, you can't tell what you're paying for.
Start with how your old platform stored prices. If it kept them tax-exclusive, every price needs converting before import, because Shopify's Japan guide requires tax-inclusive pricing. Then check URL redirects, customer records and order history. An expert who raises the price question before you mention it has probably moved a Japanese store before.
For code, no. Theme logic, integrations and speed work can be scoped and delivered in English. For anything a customer reads, yes: product pages, order emails, policy pages and any text added around checkout. A sensible split is a developer of any language for the build and a fluent Japanese writer who checks every customer-facing line before launch.
For the build, yes, and all five work in English. Everything in the set-up section above assumes a store based in Japan. A company registered elsewhere that sells into Japan faces different payment and tax settings, so say which you are in the first line of your brief. It changes the quote.
