Shopify Product Photography Services

If your collection pages look like five different shops, the photos are usually why. Mixed backgrounds, mixed crops and a new photographer every season make a catalogue look unfinished, however good the products are.

Shopify product photography covers the images in your product gallery and collection grid: white-background packshots, detail and texture shots, ghost mannequin and flat lays for apparel, and 360 spins. Lifestyle, on-model and in-context imagery is a separate brief with a different crew and budget. So is video, and so are 3D renders that replace a physical shoot.

Of the 220 listed, most are full-service agencies, so the useful test is a full catalogue shot for one brand, not a highlight reel. Compare the experts below, or request a quote with your SKU count.

How to choose an ecommerce product photographer

Product photography looks like a commodity until you reshoot 200 SKUs because the second batch doesn't match the first. The hire is about consistency and process, not one great hero image.

Ask for a catalogue, not a highlight reel. Any product photographer can show ten beautiful images. Ask for a full range they shot for one brand, ideally on a live store, and check whether lighting, angle and crop hold across fifty products.

Agree the spec before the shoot. Background colour, aspect ratio, margin around the product, shadow or no shadow, angles per SKU. Put it on one page with a sample image attached. Without it, next season's shoot never matches this one.

Check colour handling if colour sells. For apparel, cosmetics and homeware, a shade that's off on screen becomes a return. Ask how they calibrate, and whether retouching includes matching each image to the physical sample.

Get retouching itemised. Dust removal and background clean-up are standard. Colour correction, shape fixes on packaging, ghost mannequin composites and reflection control are often extra. Ask for the price per image with and without them.

Sort out sample logistics. Who pays to ship products to the studio, how long they keep them, and whether they come back. On a large catalogue this is a real line item and a real delay.

Red flags. Per-image prices that never mention retouching. No example of a catalogue shoot. Only web-sized JPGs delivered, with no full-resolution masters. And no answer to how they'll keep future shoots matching this one.

An ecommerce product photography spec that works on Shopify

A photographer can only be as consistent as the spec you give them. This is the one-page brief worth writing before any shoot.

Pick one aspect ratio for the whole catalogue. Square is the safe default. Portrait 4:5 suits apparel and tall products because it fills more of a phone screen. Most themes let you set product cards to square, portrait or the image's own ratio, and mixed ratios make collection grids look ragged.

Fix background, light and framing. Same background, same shadow treatment, same margin. Decide whether every product fills the frame equally or keeps its true relative size, and stick to it.

Shoot every variant you sell. Shopify lets you assign an image to each variant, and most themes switch the gallery when a shopper picks a colour. If the olive colourway only exists as a swatch, shoppers are guessing. List every colour in the shot list.

Standardise the angle order. Front, back, side, detail, scale, in that order for every product. The first image becomes the collection thumbnail, and many themes show the second on hover, so make it a genuinely different angle.

Name files and write alt text as you go. Ask for file names like brand-product-colour-angle.jpg, then add alt text describing the product and variant to each media item. It helps accessibility and image search, and it's far easier at upload than as a clean-up job later. The product page SEO guide covers the rest.

How much do product photography services cost?

Product photography pricing comes in two shapes: per image for predictable catalogue work, or a day rate when styling, awkward products or big volumes are involved. Typical ranges:

White background

$25 – $100

Per image, retouched, studio shot

Styled or detail

$75 – $250

Per image, props and set styling

Studio day rate

$1,000 – $3,000

Before retouching and product shipping

Per-image pricing works when the spec is fixed and products are similar: bottles, boxed goods, folded apparel. Day rates suit styled sets and large catalogues, where a well-organised studio can shoot far more than the per-image maths suggests. Ask how many finished images a day typically produces before you compare a day rate with a per-image quote.

What pushes the price up: ghost mannequin and composite work, colour-matching for apparel and cosmetics, reflective products like jewellery and glass, hand or body models, and shipping samples both ways. Lifestyle shoots are priced differently again. Send your SKU count and the image specs you need to get a quote.

What do Shopify product photographers shoot?

Most catalogue work combines three or four of these, so ask which a studio does in-house and which it subcontracts:

White-background packshots

Clean, consistent main images for the gallery and collection grid

Detail and texture shots

Close-ups of stitching, finishes, ingredients and labels

Ghost mannequin

Apparel shot on a form, with the form removed in retouching

Flat lay

Apparel, sets and bundles arranged and shot from above

360 spins

A sequence of frames the shopper can rotate through

Retouching and colour matching

Clean-up, background removal and shade correction to the sample

Frequently asked questions about Shopify product photography

Should I use a local product photographer or ship products to a studio?

Shipping to a studio is normal for packshot work and often cheaper, because studios batch similar products and leave lighting set up between shoots. Go local when products are fragile, heavy, costly to insure or change often, or when you want to attend. Either way, ask for a test shot of one SKU against your spec before sending the range.

Can I shoot product photos myself?

For a small catalogue of simple products, yes: a lightbox, a tripod and consistent light will get you usable packshots. It stops working when you need colour accuracy, reflective surfaces, apparel on a form, or dozens of SKUs that must match. A practical middle route is paying a studio to set the spec and shoot the hero products, then matching it in-house for small additions.

What's the difference between ecommerce photography services and lifestyle photography?

Ecommerce photography services usually mean catalogue images: the product isolated, lit consistently and shot to a spec. Lifestyle photography puts the product in use, on a person or in a setting, and needs locations, models and art direction. Most stores need catalogue images for every SKU and lifestyle images for a handful of hero products and banners, so budget them separately.

Do ecommerce product photography services include uploading to Shopify?

Usually not. Most studios deliver files named to your spec and stop there. Uploading, assigning images to variants and writing alt text is typically a separate product setup task, done by your team or a Shopify specialist. If the studio does upload, give it a staff or collaborator account limited to products rather than your owner login.

How many photos should each product have?

Enough to answer what a shopper would check holding it: usually a main image, two or three angles, a detail shot and something that shows scale. Complex or expensive products justify more. Beyond that, add an image only when it answers a new question. Five near-identical angles make the gallery longer without making the product clearer.

Are 360 spins worth it?

For products where shape and every side matter, such as footwear, bags, electronics and sculpted homeware, a spin can replace several static angles. For flat or simple products it adds cost without telling the shopper anything new. Shopify's product media has no dedicated spin format, so check how your store would display one before you commission it.
