Shopify Product Description Writers

Product pages are where shoppers make up their minds, yet on many stores the descriptions are the least considered words on the site: supplier text loaded at launch, or a single line written against a deadline. A Shopify product description writer replaces them with copy built from real product detail, and can work through a catalogue in tiers rather than one listing at a time.

This page also covers AI-assisted catalogue copy — descriptions drafted with AI at volume, then edited by a writer for accuracy and voice. Uploading products, variants and images is a different service, product and catalogue setup. The focus here is hiring; to write descriptions yourself, start with our guide to product descriptions.

407 experts list product description writing on shopexperts (September 2026). Shortlist writers whose samples come from your category, then have them quote on an identical handful of your products so the prices compare like for like.

What to check before hiring a Shopify product description writer

Test across tiers, not on your best product. Pay for a trial on one top seller, one mid-range product and one long-tail item. Anyone can polish a hero product. The trial reveals whether the writer can scale effort down sensibly without the cheaper copy turning vague or wrong.

Look for samples in your category and price bracket. Copy for premium skincare and copy for replacement parts use different vocabulary, different levels of detail and a different idea of what the shopper doubts. A product description copywriter with strong samples in an adjacent category is a safer hire than a generalist with a famous client list.

Ask how facts get checked. Materials, dimensions, compatibility and care instructions have to be right, and a confident mistake can come back as a return. Ask who verifies each claim against the spec sheet, and how the writer marks wording you must approve, such as ingredient or safety statements in regulated categories.

Settle the fields per product. Description only, or size notes, bullet specs and image alt text as well? Per-product quotes only compare when every writer is pricing the same set of fields.

Ask for honesty about AI. A writer using AI for first drafts is normal. One who won't say which descriptions started as drafts, or who charges researched rates for lightly edited AI copy, is not someone to trust with a catalogue.

Price the thinking, not the word count. Word count says little about what a description is worth. A writer who quotes before asking about your customers, your catalogue size or how the tiers split has priced the typing and skipped the research.

Catalogue planning: where AI product descriptions fit

Very few catalogues need every product written from scratch. Split yours by revenue before asking for quotes, because each tier calls for a different method and a different rate.

- Top sellers get individual descriptions. Give the writer spec sheets, your voice guide, and the support questions, reviews and return reasons behind each product.

- The mid-tier runs on a structured template per product type, filled with real specifics such as materials, fit, dimensions and compatibility. The writer builds the template once; each product still needs its own facts.

- The long tail needs an accurate baseline. This is where AI drafting, whether Shopify Magic in the admin or another tool, earns its place, with a human edit on every draft before it goes live.

Agree the delivery format before any writing starts. For bulk work, ask for a CSV that imports straight into Shopify, with specs that belong in metafields kept in their own columns rather than folded into the description. Product metafield columns only import into definitions that already exist, and variant metafields can't be imported by CSV.

Have the writer work in a full export of your products and change only the description, SEO and spec columns. Handles are how Shopify pairs each row with a live product, so they stay exactly as exported, and a file stripped of the variant option columns can replace your existing variants with a single default one.

Updates only apply when the import runs with the "Overwrite products with matching handles" box ticked, and a blank cell in any included column wipes the live value. Load five products first and check them in the admin before the rest.

How much does product description writing cost?

Per-product pricing is the norm, and the tier sets the rate. Researched and baseline rates below are typical US market ranges; the directory figure comes from claimed shopexperts profiles in September 2026.

Researched description

$25 – $150

Per product, written from your customer data

Bulk baseline copy

$15 – $30

Per product, templated or AI-assisted, then edited

Starting prices on shopexperts

$49 – $1,000

Median $500 among 5 claimed profiles

Check what a listed starting price buys. It can be a minimum batch rather than one description, which changes how it compares with a per-product rate.

Rates climb for technical or regulated products, for catalogues where variants differ in ways the copy has to explain, and when SEO titles, meta descriptions or metafield values are added per product. Delivery as an import-ready file costs more than a document, and it's worth paying for on any batch you would otherwise paste in by hand.

For a quote, send your product count split into the three tiers, a sample spec sheet, and the listing whose current description bothers you most.

What product copywriters do on a Shopify catalogue

Jobs range from a single flagship product to the far end of a large catalogue:

Top-seller descriptions

Individually researched copy for the products that earn most

Catalogue templates

A structure per product type, filled with verified specifics

AI draft editing

Generated copy checked for accuracy, voice and repetition

Supplier copy rewrites

Manufacturer text replaced with copy unique to your store

Spec and metafield copy

Materials, sizing and care written into structured fields

Import-ready delivery

Copy supplied as a CSV that loads into Shopify cleanly

Questions about product description writing services

What does a human edit of AI generated product descriptions involve?

More than a proofread. The editor checks every stated material, measurement and feature against the spec sheet and removes claims the product can't support. They vary openings and phrases that repeat across similar products, and swap generic filler for details a shopper would actually use. Budget for it per product: an unedited AI draft published at scale copies its mistakes across the whole catalogue.

Can I keep the manufacturer's descriptions?

Keep the spec data, once you've verified it. As the description itself, supplier copy is weak. Every retailer stocking the same product may be publishing identical text, which gives Google little reason to rank your page and gives shoppers no reason to prefer your store. Rewrite top sellers first, then work down the catalogue as budget allows, and keep the manufacturer's figures in your spec fields.

Should a product copywriter write SEO titles and meta descriptions too?

Usually, yes. Every Shopify product comes with SEO title and meta description fields, and the person who has just researched the product is best placed to write them. Adding them in the same pass is simpler than briefing a second project later. Agree the target search terms per product, or at least per product type, so the snippets aren't guesses. The product page SEO guide listed below covers the technical side.

Do product variants need separate descriptions?

Not normally. On Shopify, one product carries one description shared by all its variants, so the writer explains what changes between them, such as sizing, finish or capacity, within that copy. If the differences are big enough to need their own page, splitting variants into separate products is a catalogue structure decision. Make it with your product setup specialist before any copy is written.

Can a product description writer handle other languages?

Some write natively in more than one language, so ask. Shopify's free Translate & Adapt app stores translations and offers automatic translation within limits, and Shopify Markets handles the language domains or subfolders. Machine translation can serve as a baseline for long-tail products, provided a native speaker reviews the top sellers.

How does product copywriting keep up with new seasonal ranges?

Through templates. Once a writer has built a structure for each product type, new arrivals can be written quickly by your own team, by the writer on a small retainer, or as AI drafts that follow the template and get the same edit. Ask for the templates and a short style note as part of the first project, so each season doesn't start with a fresh brief and a new quote.
