Shopify's checkout supports Spanish but not Catalan. If your brand trades in both, that's a decision to settle before anyone designs a page, and it's a quick test of whether an expert has built stores here before.
The October 2026 count stands at 32 Shopify experts in Spain on shopexperts, most of them in Madrid and Barcelona. Thirty are agencies and two are freelancers. All 32 offer store setup and management, 27 also list Shopify development, and nearly all of them work in Spanish and English.
Marketing appears on 23 of the 32 profiles, so expect some proposals to bundle the build with campaigns. Read the profiles below, Spanish experts first, then get competing quotes from two or three agencies on one brief.
One supplier from build to campaigns is easy to find. Across all 32 profiles, store setup appears on every one, Shopify development on 27, marketing and growth on 23 and consulting and strategy on 20. If you want a solo developer instead, the local list has two.
Languages reach well past Spanish. Spanish appears on 31 profiles and English on 30. Italian is listed by 6, German and French by 4 each. That makes the Spanish list a sensible starting point for a store planning to sell into Italy, Germany or France: pick a team that lists the language and it can review the translated storefront. None of the 32 lists Catalan, so if your brand writes in it, ask who on the team would.
Content and compliance are thinner. Design, UX & Branding shows up on 12 profiles, Copywriting & Content on 10, and Finance, Taxes & Compliance on 6. Most agencies here don't list those services, so ask early who writes the product copy and who checks the VAT settings.
Who appears in the listing, and in what order. Profiles of experts based in Spain lead the page. Further down are experts from other countries who also serve European merchants, which is the place to look for a freelancer, given how few the local list has.
Fifteen of the 32 experts based in Spain publish a starting price. Their figures, in USD as checked in October 2026, are below, minus any Spanish profile that shows a zero price.
Middle half of starting prices
Where half of Spanish prices fall
Median starting price
Midpoint of 15 published prices
Top quarter of listed prices

Read a starting price as the entry point for working with an expert, not as a quote. Half of the Spanish experts who list one start at $200 or less. For an agency, that number rarely covers a finished store, so ask what it does buy: an audit, a theme install or a block of support hours.
What changes the quote. Product and variant count, the number of languages, a migration from another platform, and the share of the budget going to marketing. Give every expert the Spanish specifics up front: Spanish only or Catalan too, any shop counter that will run POS, and the name of whoever files your VAT. Add your catalogue size, current platform, must-keep apps and a target launch month.
Start with Shopify Payments. Spanish stores get Shopify Payments, paid out in euro. Make it the first gateway your expert configures: Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android with Shopify POS runs only on Shopify Payments.
Shop counters. Spanish merchants can order POS hardware from Shopify itself, through its hardware store, so a shop in Madrid or Barcelona doesn't need a reseller. Ask your expert to set up POS locations and stock levels before the shop opens, not after the first stock count goes wrong.
Shopify Capital. Shopify Capital is offered to eligible businesses based in Spain. It isn't part of any build, but it's useful context if a rebuild is waiting on cash.
VAT and the 13 May 2026 cut-off. A new Spanish store picks between Shopify Tax and Manual Tax. Forget Basic Tax unless your shop was already configured for EU tax ahead of that 13 May 2026 date. Reporting through the Union One-Stop Shop has to run through Shopify Tax or Basic Tax, not Manual Tax. Filing and paying the VAT is never Shopify's job, so your accountant still owns the return.
Spanish yes, Catalan no. The admin and checkout both support Spanish. Shopify translates neither into Catalan, so a Catalan-Spanish brand can write Catalan product pages, but a Catalan checkout means extra translation work that Shopify doesn't include. Get that into the scope document before the build starts.
Store setup is on every profile of an expert based in Spain. The differences start lower down.
All 32 profiles: builds, configuration and ongoing care
27 of 32: themes, custom sections and integrations
23 profiles: SEO, paid media and email
20 profiles: audits, roadmaps and replatforming advice
12 profiles: theme design, UX and brand identity
10 profiles: product descriptions and site copy
Some can. Shopify Development appears on 27 of the 32 Spanish profiles, but the label stretches from small theme edits to custom apps. Ask each candidate for a live example of custom code they wrote, what it connects to, and who owns it now. If all they can show is theme installs, you're talking to a setup agency, which is fine for setup and wrong for an integration project.
Only if being nearby helps the work. A local agency is useful for a launch workshop, a product shoot or POS in a physical shop, and makes little difference otherwise. For a Catalan-speaking brand, proof matters more than postcode: ask for a live store with Catalan content and a clear plan for the checkout, which Shopify doesn't translate into Catalan.
Yes, and for a store selling only in Spain with a modest catalogue it's often the right call. Every expert based in Spain lists store setup, while 23 of the 32 list marketing, so ask for a setup quote on its own and leave campaigns as a separate decision once the store has sales data. If an agency will only quote the bundle, get a second quote from one that won't.
Yes. Your Shopify expert configures the tax method and checks that VAT shows correctly in prices and order confirmations; your adviser decides which registrations you need and files the returns. Only 6 of the 32 Spanish profiles list Finance, Taxes & Compliance, so don't expect the agency building your store to cover the adviser's side.
Ask for three live stores that sell in euro to Spanish shoppers and open each on a phone. Check how fast product pages load, whether VAT shows clearly in prices, and how the checkout reads in Spanish. Then ask who did the work and whether that person would be on your project, because on a list of 30 agencies the name on the proposal and the hands on the keyboard can differ.
