Shopify Design, UX & Branding Experts

Twenty-two different services get called "Shopify design", and they range from a $500 banner to a $350,000 brand and design system. The most expensive mistake in this category is hiring the wrong discipline — a brand strategist won't fix your product page conversion, and a UI designer won't build you a visual identity.

Five distinct jobs sit under this category:

- Visual identity and branding — logo, colour systems, typography and brand guidelines. Strategy work that produces assets everything else follows. See visual identity and logo design or branding.

- Store design and UX — theme design, UX/UI, and conversion-focused design work applied to the storefront itself. Start with Shopify UX/UI design or theme design.

- Content production — product photography, lifestyle photography, videography and product demo videos. Ongoing rather than project work for most brands.

- Advertising and social creative — ad creative design, creative direction, motion graphics and UGC. Sits closer to marketing than to store design.

- Emerging formats — 3D product rendering, AR product visualisation and interactive web design, for categories where customers need to examine the product before buying.

If you're unsure which applies, the shortest route is describing the outcome rather than the service: "our product pages don't convert" leads somewhere different from "our brand looks dated across every channel". Compare vetted Shopify design experts below, or browse the specific service you need.

How to hire a Shopify designer

Design is the easiest Shopify hire to get wrong expensively, because the output looks good either way. A store can be beautifully designed and convert worse than what it replaced, and you won't know for a quarter.

Decide which of the three jobs you're buying. Look, brand, or experience — the ranges above differ by an order of magnitude, and briefing "we need a redesign" invites the most expensive interpretation. If you're unsure, a brand and UX audit ($1,000-$4,000) will tell you which before you commit to a full project.

Ask for live Shopify stores, not portfolios. Concept work on Behance and Dribbble looks superb because nothing constrains it. Shipped Shopify stores prove the designer can work inside theme architecture, section and block limits, checkout restrictions and app UI compatibility. Ask for five live URLs from the last twelve months, ideally in your category.

Verify there's a UX process, not just a visual one. Reputable designers ship research, wireframes or prototypes before high-fidelity work. A proposal that jumps straight to mockups for anything beyond a light refresh produces design that photographs well and converts poorly. Ask specifically what discovery includes and what evidence informs layout decisions.

Check who implements it. A designer handing files to your developer is a different arrangement from a studio that builds what it designs. Both work, but the handover is where budgets overrun — unclear specs, missing states, and mobile behaviour nobody documented. Ask what the deliverable actually contains: Figma files, a design system, documented states, or just screens.

Fix revision rounds in the contract. "Unlimited revisions" sounds generous and reliably produces scope creep on both sides. Two or three defined rounds with a clear approval step protects everyone.

When a redesign is the wrong answer

A meaningful share of merchants who commission a redesign didn't need one, and the money would have returned more elsewhere. Before you brief a studio, rule these out.

Your conversion problem is a speed problem. If mobile pages load slowly, no visual treatment fixes it — visitors leave before the design renders. A speed audit costs $300-$900 and will tell you whether you have a performance problem wearing a design costume. This is the single most common misdiagnosis.

Your conversion problem is a traffic problem. If the traffic arriving is poorly qualified, the store converts badly regardless of how it looks. Redesigning to fix a targeting problem is expensive and doesn't work.

You have no evidence about what's failing. Redesigning without knowing which step loses people replaces a system you don't understand with another one you won't understand. Session recordings, funnel analysis and a handful of user tests cost a fraction of a redesign and frequently identify three specific fixes worth more than the whole project.

Your theme is fine and your content isn't. Poor product photography, thin product descriptions and missing trust signals look like design problems and aren't. Photography and copy typically cost less than redesign and move conversion more.

You're two versions behind on a good theme. Sometimes the fix is updating and customising the theme you have, at $2,000-$10,000, rather than replacing it at $30,000.

A designer worth hiring will raise at least one of these before quoting. If the first conversation goes straight to scope and timeline without asking what evidence you have that design is the constraint, that's informative.

How much does a Shopify designer cost?

Shopify design ranges from $500 for a single-page fix to $350,000+ for enterprise brand and design system work. The variable that moves the number most is not visual ambition — it's whether research and implementation are included. Typical ranges from experts listed on shopexperts:

Per project

$500 – $350,000+

Single-page fixes to enterprise brand systems

Hourly rate

$60 – $400

Freelance designers to senior creative directors

Monthly retainer

$2,000 – $25,000+

Ongoing creative direction and campaign design

Small design tweaks and single-page fixes sit at $500-$3,000. Theme redesign on existing brand assets runs $8,000-$30,000. UX-driven redesign with research, wireframes and testing runs $15,000-$90,000. Full brand identity plus theme application runs $25,000-$120,000. Enterprise Shopify Plus brand and design system work — Figma libraries, documented components, governance — runs $60,000-$350,000 and typically pairs with a Plus Partner development team. A brand and UX audit, useful before committing to any of the above, runs $1,000-$4,000.

Ongoing retainers for creative direction, campaign and banner design run $2,000-$8,000/month, rising past $25,000/month where brand development is active. Offshore designers charge 50-70% less and deliver well on defined visual production — banners, page layouts from documented specs, asset resizing. Brand strategy and UX research rarely translate offshore, because both depend on consumer context that doesn't transfer. Request a free quote for a figure specific to your project.

What do Shopify design and branding experts do?

Design engagements usually cover one or two of these rather than all six. A studio claiming equal depth across all of them is usually strongest at two:

Theme Design and Customisation

Full theme design, section design, mobile-first layouts

Brand Identity for Ecommerce

Logo, typography, colour systems, voice and tone guidelines

UX Research and Testing

User interviews, session analysis, prototypes, usability testing

Conversion-Focused Design

Product pages, cart, checkout, upsell and cross-sell flows

Product Content Direction

Photography and video direction, lifestyle content briefs

Design Systems for Shopify Plus

Figma libraries, documented components, brand governance

Frequently asked questions about hiring Shopify designers

What does a Shopify design expert do?

A Shopify design expert handles the visual and interaction layer of your store — theme design and customisation, brand identity for ecommerce, UX research and usability testing, conversion-focused design for product pages and checkout, product photography and content direction, and design systems for larger Plus stores. Most designers specialise in one or two of these rather than all six.

How much does a Shopify designer cost?

$500 to $350,000+ per project, $60 to $400 per hour, or $2,000 to $25,000+ per month on retainer. Theme redesign on existing brand assets runs $8,000-$30,000, UX-driven redesign with research runs $15,000-$90,000, full brand identity plus theme application runs $25,000-$120,000, and enterprise design system work runs $60,000-$350,000.

Do I need a full rebrand or just a theme redesign?

Most stores need a theme redesign — updated visual treatment on existing brand assets, $8,000-$30,000, 6-10 weeks. A full rebrand is warranted when your identity is genuinely dated, off-strategy, or inconsistent across channels, and it runs $25,000-$120,000 over 12-20 weeks. The honest test is whether customers would recognise your brand with the logo removed. If yes, you have an identity worth keeping and updating rather than replacing. A brand audit at $1,000-$4,000 settles it before you commit.

How do I know a redesign will actually improve conversion?

You don't, unless the design is grounded in evidence about what's currently failing. That's the difference between a redesign and a UX-driven redesign, and it's why the second costs more. Before commissioning either, look at session recordings and funnel drop-off — if you can't name the two or three steps where you lose people, a designer can't fix them and will design to taste instead. Research-led projects cost more upfront and are the only ones where conversion improvement is a reasonable expectation rather than a hope.

What's the difference between a Shopify designer and a general web designer?

Shopify's constraints are specific: theme architecture, section and block limits, checkout restrictions on non-Plus plans, app UI compatibility, and how Liquid templating affects what's practical. A general web designer produces files that look excellent and cost 30-60% more to implement, because every decision made without those constraints in mind becomes a workaround. For anything beyond a light refresh, Shopify-native design pays for itself in implementation savings alone.

Should I use a premium theme or commission custom design?

Both, for almost every store. A premium theme ($180-$500) provides the structural foundation; a designer customises it to your brand — typography, colour, product page layout, custom sections, mobile behaviour. Fully custom design without a theme foundation rarely justifies its cost until roughly $5M annual revenue, and even then usually only when you have functional requirements no theme covers. Starting from a theme is not a compromise; it's what most well-designed Shopify stores do.

How long does a Shopify redesign take?

A theme refresh on existing brand assets takes 3-6 weeks. A full theme redesign with UX research takes 6-12 weeks. Brand identity plus theme application takes 12-20 weeks. Enterprise Plus brand and design system work takes 16-32 weeks. Rush timelines are possible and almost always achieved by cutting research, which trades short-term speed for the thing you were buying.

Can I hire a designer offshore?

For defined visual production, yes — banners, page layouts built from documented specs, asset resizing and adaptation all translate well, at 50-70% less. Brand strategy and UX research translate poorly, because both depend on understanding consumer context, cultural reference and category conventions in your market. The practical pattern for larger brands is senior local direction with offshore production underneath it, which captures most of the saving without the risk.
