Shopify Migration Services and Replatforming Specialists
Replatforming goes wrong in the details nobody listed: customers who can't log in, a category page that ranked for five years now returning a 404, reviews that never came across. A Shopify migration service exists to catch those before launch day. It moves your products, customers, order history and content from another platform, maps every old URL to Shopify's structure and replaces the apps and integrations the old store relied on.
This is a move between platforms. Redesigning a store that's already on Shopify is a different service, and so is setting up a new store with nothing to bring across. If you're running the move yourself, the platform guides linked below cover the steps; this page is about hiring someone to own it.
Compare the migration experts and agencies below, or request a quote with your current platform, product count and the integrations that must keep working.

How to choose a Shopify migration service
Ask for migrations from your platform specifically. Moving from Magento is not the same job as moving from Wix or WooCommerce. Each platform stores products, options, customer groups and URLs differently, and the gaps show up in different places. Ask for a recent example from your platform and what went wrong on it.
Get the data scope in writing. The quote should list which records move (products, variants, images, customers, orders, reviews, blog posts, gift card balances), roughly how many of each and in what form. "Full migration" in a proposal means whatever the expert later decides it means.
Ask for the redirect plan before you sign. A capable Shopify migration expert crawls your current site, exports every indexed URL and maps each one to its new address. Anyone who plans to "set up redirects at the end" hasn't priced the work.
Insist on a test migration. One full import into the new store while it's still password-protected, checked by you against the old site. That's where wrong variant mappings, broken special characters and missing images surface, while there's still time to fix the script.
Agree the cut-over plan. Who freezes changes on the old store, when the final batch of new orders and customers moves, when the domain switches and who watches the first 48 hours. A launch planned for Friday afternoon is a red flag.
Size the team to the risk. Agencies make up 70 of the first 100 migration listings on shopexperts (September 2026). A freelancer suits a small catalogue on a standard platform. A Shopify migration agency with a project manager earns its fee when ERP, 3PL or wholesale pricing has to move too.
What moves in a migration to Shopify, and what doesn't
Most migration problems start with the assumption that everything moves the same way. It doesn't.
- Products, variants and images move well, but options often need remapping. Configurable or bundled products from other platforms may need rebuilding as variants, metafields or bundles.
- Customers: names, addresses and marketing consent move. Passwords don't, so every customer sets a new password or activates their account. Plan the invitation email and the message on the login page.
- Order history usually comes across as archived records for reference and reporting, not as orders you fulfil again.
- Reviews need their own export and import: Shopify has no built-in product reviews, so they move into whichever reviews app you use.
- Gift cards and store credit need their own step. Customers notice missing balances quickly.
- URLs change almost everywhere, because Shopify uses fixed prefixes: /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/. Every indexed old URL needs a 301 redirect.
- Blog posts move, but the links inside them still point at old URLs until someone updates them.
- Apps don't move at all. Each plugin or extension needs a Shopify replacement or a decision to drop the feature.
SEO safeguards. Keep a full crawl of the old site. Redirect each URL to its closest match, never the homepage. Carry over page titles, meta descriptions and category text. After launch, check Search Console for new 404s daily for the first fortnight. The guide to keeping SEO through a migration goes into the redirect work in more detail.
How much do Shopify migration experts charge?
Data complexity and the number of connected systems move the price more than product count does. Typical ranges for the work:
Simple migration
$1,500 – $8,000
Small catalogue, standard data
Complex migration
$10,000 – $50,000
Large catalogue, custom data, integrations
Enterprise replatform
$50,000 – $250,000+
Plus, B2B, multiple stores and systems
On shopexperts, 71 of the first 100 migration listings have claimed profiles, and their published starting prices run from $40 to $10,000, median $500 (September 2026). Those are entry points for small jobs. A full replatform gets quoted after the expert has seen your data.
What moves the price: product types that need restructuring, years of order history, multi-language or multi-currency content, how many apps need replacing, and whether an ERP, PIM or 3PL integration has to be rebuilt. The migration cost guide has more detail. To get a quote, send record counts from your current platform (products, customers, orders) and the list of apps and integrations the new store has to replace.
What ecommerce migration services cover on Shopify
Six workstreams, and a good plan names one owner for each:
Migration audit
Data, URLs, apps and integrations inventoried before the quote
Data migration
Products, customers, orders, reviews and content imported and checked
Redirect mapping
Every indexed URL mapped to its new Shopify address with a 301
App and integration replacement
Plugins replaced, ERP and 3PL connections rebuilt and tested
Storefront rebuild
Theme set up so key templates match or improve on the old site
Cut-over and launch
Final data sync, domain switch and post-launch checks
Questions about ecommerce replatforming to Shopify
Yes, in almost every case. The new store is built and tested while the old one keeps trading, and customers only see the change when the domain moves. The risk window is short but real: orders and new accounts created on the old platform in the final days have to come across in a last sync. Plan the switch for your quietest trading hours, and keep the old platform running until you've confirmed nothing was missed.
Usually, yes. Magento stores often carry configurable products, customer groups with their own pricing, several store views and custom extensions built up over years. Each needs a Shopify equivalent: variants and metafields for configurable products, customer-specific pricing that may depend on your Shopify plan, and Shopify Markets where store views exist for different countries. Ask how the expert handles each one, and read the Magento guide linked below for the platform detail.
Only if the old design can't come across anyway. Changing platform and design together means that if traffic or conversion dips after launch, you can't tell which change caused it. The safer order is to migrate onto a theme that keeps your current structure and navigation, let things settle for a few weeks, then redesign. Stores leaving a heavily customised platform often have no choice, and that's fine if the redirects and tracking are solid.
Admin access to the old platform, plus database or API access if the expert asks for it. A list of every app, plugin and integration with what it does. Access to analytics and Search Console. Then the decisions only you can make: how many years of orders to bring, whether to move inactive customers, and which features to drop rather than replace. Those decisions shape the quote.
Keep it running, read-only, for a few months. You'll need it for order lookups, returns on pre-migration orders, accounting records and checking any old URL that turns up as a 404 later. Take a full data export before you cancel the subscription or hosting, and only cancel once the domain points to Shopify and the redirects have been confirmed working.
It should, and the length belongs in the contract. The first few weeks surface problems no test catches: a payment method failing for one country, an email flow still linking to old URLs, an accounting or marketplace feed rejecting the new order format. Ask how long the post-launch window runs, what counts as a migration defect rather than new work, and how fast the expert responds during it.
