Shopify Theme Customization and Setup Experts
Your theme already does most of what you need. The rest is a product page that needs a size chart, a header that falls apart on mobile, or brand colours the editor won’t quite match.
Shopify theme customization closes that gap: installing and setting up a theme, adjusting layouts, sections and styles, small Liquid and CSS changes, and applying theme updates without losing earlier work. The theme stays the one you chose. The specialist makes it fit your catalogue and your brand.
It isn’t writing new sections and templates from scratch, which is theme development, and it isn’t a bespoke build from designs. If the change list keeps growing past a handful of templates, you probably need one of those instead.

How to hire for Shopify theme changes
Start with your theme’s name and version. Both are shown in your theme library. A specialist who knows your theme can tell from that alone which requests are settings, which need a new block and which need code, and quote accordingly.
Send screenshots, not adjectives. “Make the product page cleaner” gets you a guess. Annotated screenshots of the current page, plus an example of what you want on desktop and mobile, get you a quote you can hold someone to.
Ask for past work on your theme family. A portfolio of finished stores doesn’t show what the specialist actually changed. Ask for two projects on the same theme or vendor, and what was a setting, what was a section and what was code.
Insist on a copy. Changes belong on a duplicate of the live theme, shared through a preview link and published only after you’ve checked them on your own phone. Editing the live theme means customers see the half-finished version.
Agree a numbered change list and a revision limit. Customisation drifts. A written list of changes with two rounds of revisions included stops a small job becoming an open-ended retainer nobody budgeted for.
Ask who applies the next update. Find out whether the price covers your theme’s next update, or what they charge for it. Customised themes fall behind because nobody owns that job.
Red flags. A quote that never mentions mobile. No mention of working on a duplicate theme. A new app suggested for something your theme can already do. An offer to rebuild the whole theme when you asked for a few layout changes.
Customisation that survives the next theme update
Every Shopify theme update brings bug fixes, new features and support for new platform features. It also exposes every shortcut taken during customisation. The order in which changes are made decides how painful each update will be.
Theme editor first. Colours, fonts, section order, which blocks appear and most layout choices are theme settings. Updates keep editor settings, so anything done here carries forward at no cost.
App blocks second. Features from apps should sit in app blocks that you place through the editor. They survive updates and leave no stray code in theme files when you remove the app.
Code last, in separate files. When code is unavoidable, a new section or snippet file is safer than editing the theme’s own templates. Updates carry code edits across when they don’t conflict with the vendor’s changes. Conflicting edits need reapplying manually, and someone bills for each one.
Keep a list of every edited file. A plain record of what changed and why turns an update from detective work into a checklist.
Know when to stop patching. A theme several major versions behind, carrying years of edits from different freelancers, reaches a point where updating costs more than starting again on a current theme and redoing the customisations cleanly. The signs: the update preview breaks several templates, nobody can say which edits still matter, and pages have slowed down. Ask a specialist to quote both routes.
How is theme customisation priced?
Most theme customisation is priced per change or by the hour. Typical market ranges:
Small change
$100 – $500
One section, layout or style tweak
Customisation project
$500 – $5,000
Several templates and sections
Hourly rate
$40 – $120
Theme customisation specialists
The number of templates touched moves the price most, followed by whether a change needs code. Editor-only work sits at the bottom of each range. Custom Liquid on product and cart templates, where apps, variants and discounts interact, sits at the top. Setting up a theme for a new store usually lands in the project range, because it touches every template.
Among the first 100 listings for this service, the claimed profiles publish a median starting price of $400 (September 2026). That figure is an entry point for small jobs, not a project estimate. For a breakdown by type of job, see the theme customization cost guide. Send your numbered change list and theme version to get a quote.

Frequently asked questions about theme setup and customisation
Dawn is Shopify’s free reference theme: lean, fast and deliberately plain, with fewer sections and settings than most premium themes. More requests on Dawn therefore need a new block or a code change rather than a setting. Premium themes offer more in the editor but carry more code to work around. Shopify’s newer free themes, such as Horizon, are organised differently again, so confirm exactly which theme you run before briefing anyone.
No. Specialists with a Shopify Partner account send a collaborator request, and you decide which areas it covers; for theme work, that’s mainly the themes section. Others can be added as a staff member with limited permissions. They should work on a duplicate of your live theme, and their access should be removed when the job ends.
There’s no fixed schedule, but each version you skip makes the next update bigger. Read the release notes when your theme library shows an update is available. Apply updates that fix bugs or add something you’ll use, and test them on an unpublished copy first. Reviewing updates every few months is a sensible rhythm for most customised stores.
Products, collections, pages, navigation and store settings stay put, because they belong to the store rather than the theme. Section content, theme settings and code edits generally don’t carry over and have to be recreated. That makes a switch a good moment to drop customisations the new theme already offers as standard. A specialist can map each current change to its equivalent before you commit.
Choosing a preset, setting colours, typography and logo, building the header, footer, navigation and home page from your content, and configuring product and collection templates, then checking every template on mobile. It stops short of product imports and admin settings, which sit with product setup and store setup specialists. Supply logo files, brand colours and final copy up front; missing content is the usual cause of delays.
They can, depending on how the changes are made. Editor settings rarely add much weight. Extra fonts, large images in new sections, scripts that load on every page and apps installed for one small feature all do. Ask the specialist to compare the speed of the duplicate theme with the live one before publishing, and to load any new script only on the templates that use it.
