German consumer law decides several things a designer would normally choose freely. Brief your designer on these before the first layout.
Prices and unit prices. Under the Price Indication Ordinance (PAngV), prices shown to consumers include VAT, and goods sold by weight, volume or length need a unit price (Grundpreis) shown clearly with the price. Product cards and product pages need room for both, plus a note on shipping costs.
Legal pages and the order button. The Impressum, required under § 5 of the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz (DDG), must be easy to reach from every page, along with terms, privacy and withdrawal information. The final order button has to say clearly that the order costs money, for example "zahlungspflichtig bestellen".
Cookie consent. Under § 25 of the TDDDG, non-essential cookies need consent, so the banner is part of the design, with rejecting as easy as accepting.
Accessibility. Since 28 June 2025, the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) has applied to many online shops selling to consumers; microenterprises are exempt. Our Shopify accessibility guide covers the checks.

Most German agencies quote per project in euros. Ask whether each quote includes 19% VAT; some freelancers use the small-business rule (Kleinunternehmerregelung) and charge no VAT at all.
