A broad Portuguese list that works in English and Spanish

Eight agencies, four freelancers. The Portuguese list splits two to one in favour of agencies. Four freelancers on a list of 12 is a genuine choice for smaller or ongoing work, not a token option. Hand the freelancers defined jobs and the agencies anything that runs from build into marketing.

Broad skills for a short list. Store Setup & Management appears on all 12 profiles, Shopify Development on 10, Marketing & Growth on 8 and Consulting & Strategy on 7. Design, UX & Branding, Copywriting & Content and Finance, Taxes & Compliance are each listed by 6. Half the list offering tax and compliance work is useful for any store that sells across the EU and needs VAT handled properly.

English and Spanish on the profiles. All 12 list English and 10 list Spanish; two profiles add French and one adds Dutch. Portuguese isn't among the languages these profiles state, so if you need copy written in European Portuguese, ask each expert directly rather than assume.

Where they are. Lisbon, Porto and Braga come up most often, with other profiles in towns such as Coimbra, Maia and Funchal. A face-to-face kick-off is possible in the capital and in the north.

Splitting the work between Portuguese and European experts

Twelve local profiles cover most Portuguese launches, but not every skill in depth.

Keep Portugal-specific work local. Switching on MB WAY and Multibanco, checking how VAT appears in euro prices and testing a Portuguese checkout go faster with someone who has done it for stores here. Ask for two live Portuguese stores and click through each checkout as far as the payment step.

Widen the search for capacity. If your project needs a designer, a copywriter and a developer at once, six local profiles in design and six in copy may not give you enough choice. The experts further down the listing add options; ask them for a store they've delivered in Portuguese.

Start with a paid test. Give a new agency a small Portugal-specific job first, such as enabling the local payment methods or auditing the tax settings. You'll see how it scopes, communicates and documents a job before you trust it with a full build.

What the brief needs. Product count, whether you sell only in Portugal or across Iberia, the payment methods you want at checkout, who files your VAT, and whether POS is in scope. POS changes the shopping list, because hardware for Portugal comes from third-party retailers.

Shopify in Portugal: payments, POS and VAT details to get right

Shopify Payments and local methods. Shopify Payments is open to Portuguese stores and pays out in euro. Shopify's documentation lists MB WAY and Multibanco as local payment methods available through it, so a good expert enables both and puts a test transaction through each before launch.

POS hardware is bought elsewhere. Shopify's hardware store doesn't ship to Portugal. Shopify's advice is to source supported POS devices through third-party retailers instead, so have your expert confirm each model is compatible before money changes hands. If POS isn't in scope yet, say so, and the expert can leave locations ready for later.

VAT is your filing, not Shopify's. Shopify does not file or remit EU VAT, so the expert's job is to make the store's settings match what your accountant reports. New stores can use Shopify Tax or enter rates through Manual Tax. If you report through the Union One-Stop Shop, Manual Tax won't do: OSS needs Shopify Tax, or Basic Tax, though Basic Tax is open only to stores set up to collect EU tax before 13 May 2026.

Portuguese from admin to checkout. Shopify offers Portuguese (Portugal) in the admin and at checkout, so your team and your customers can work in European Portuguese throughout. Ask your expert to check that checkout and notification wording reads as European rather than Brazilian Portuguese.

Can one freelancer handle a full Shopify launch in Portugal?

For a small catalogue and standard settings, often yes: payments with MB WAY and Multibanco, VAT, a theme and a Portuguese checkout are configuration work. A solo freelancer struggles with breadth, meaning design, copy and marketing at once. If you need all three, hire an agency or pair a freelancer with a copywriter from the list. Four of the 12 experts based in Portugal are freelancers.

Can a Portuguese developer connect Shopify to my invoicing or ERP system?

Ten of the 12 Portuguese profiles list Shopify Development, so the skills are there; whether a given expert has connected your particular system is another matter. Name the system in your brief, ask for a store where they built a similar connection, and agree who maintains it when either side updates. Integrations tend to break quietly, so ask how they'd monitor it.

Is a Portuguese expert a good choice for a brand based outside Portugal?

Often, yes. Every expert based in Portugal lists English, so a brand run from the UK, Ireland or further afield can brief them directly. What a local expert adds is checkout knowledge: which local payment methods to switch on and how a European Portuguese store should read. Ask for a live Portuguese store they set up, and have a native reader check its checkout wording.

Can a Portuguese expert run my Spanish store too?
