Shopify Store Redesign and Build Experts
A store rarely needs redesigning just because it looks dated. It needs it because three freelancers have patched the theme, apps are doing jobs the theme could do, and nobody dares touch the product template. A Shopify store redesign fixes that as one project: reworked or new templates, content and app blocks moved across, and the URLs, SEO and tracking that already earn money kept intact.
This page covers redesigning or rebuilding a store that already trades, and a Shopify store build from scratch run as a development project. Configuring a new store so it can launch is store setup. A brief that is mostly about brand and visual look sits closer to theme design.

Over the last 10+ years, I’ve worked as a freelancer, spent four years at a creative agency leading design, development, and client delivery, and now run a 2-person team that feels more like a creative partner than a traditional agency. We work closely with merchants who want a Shopify site that actually reflects the brand they’ve built — and can support where they’re going next. I’m most interested in projects where design, dev, and strategy all overlap — where there’s a real problem to solve, not just a template to swap.

Some of the projects I am most proud of involve transforming underperforming storefronts into fast, mobile-first websites with measurable improvements in conversion rate and user engagement. My approach blends UX/UI enhancement, speed optimisation, and conversion rate optimisation (CRO) strategies to ensure every site not only looks great but delivers real business results. Whether collaborating with agencies or supporting in-house teams, I take a hands-on, performance-driven approach to development-turning creative ideas into high-impact digital experiences.
How to hire a Shopify store developer for a redesign
Ask to see a redesign, not just launches. Building on an empty store is the easy version. A redesign means working around live orders, existing URLs, installed apps and a team that keeps editing products mid-project. Ask for one store they rebuilt while it kept trading, and what they had to fix in the first month after launch.
Get the scope written as templates, not pages. Shopify themes run on templates: home, collection, product, cart, page and blog post, plus any alternate templates you use for landing pages or special products. "Twelve pages" tells you nothing. A list of which templates get rebuilt, which sections are new and which stay as they are can be compared quote against quote.
Ask how they handle the switch. The right answer is building on an unpublished theme, reviewing it in preview, then publishing in a quiet trading window. Ask who re-adds app blocks and embeds, who re-tests tracking and who owns the redirect list if any handles change. A developer who plans to work on the live theme is a red flag.
Ask what happens to your existing code edits. Custom code stays behind when you change theme. Every hard-coded tweak, custom snippet and metafield-driven section has to be found, then rebuilt or retired. A good developer audits this before quoting. A weak one finds it in week three and sends a change request.
Ask who tests, and on what. A redesign should be tested on real phones with real checkout journeys: a discount code, a gift card, a subscription product if you sell them, and every payment method you offer. Designers rarely test the cart, and the cart is where redesign launches tend to break.
Red flags. A fixed price before anyone has looked at your theme code and app list. No mention of redirects, analytics or app blocks. A plan to rebuild everything when two templates cause most of the problems.
Shopify redesign, refresh or full rebuild: which one you need
Refresh on the current theme. Choose this when the theme is still supported and the problems sit in a few templates: a weak product page, cluttered navigation, a homepage built around last year's range. You get new sections, reworked layouts and updated styling. URLs, apps and tracking stay where they are, which makes this the cheapest and lowest-risk option.
Redesign on a new theme. Justified when the theme has been patched so heavily that each update turns into a round of manual rework. A move to a current theme clears that debt in one go.
Full rebuild. The real job when the problems sit under the storefront: duplicate products, inconsistent variants, tags doing work that metafields should do, overlapping apps, and ERP or 3PL links held together by manual exports. Design becomes the smaller part of the budget. Skip the data clean-up and the new theme sits on the same mess.
What to protect in all three:
- URLs: keep product and collection handles unchanged, and 301-redirect any that must change.
- SEO content: collection descriptions, blog posts and page titles often carry years of rankings. Move them; don't rewrite them in passing.
- Tracking: re-test analytics, ad pixels and conversion events on the new theme before it goes live.
- App blocks: reviews, subscription and upsell widgets placed as blocks or embeds have to be re-added and checked on every template.
How much does a Shopify store redesign cost?
Scope sets the price far more than store size does. Typical market ranges, next to what experts on shopexperts publish as starting prices:
Refresh on current theme
$1,000 – $5,000
New sections, layout and styling
Full redesign or rebuild
$8,000 – $30,000
New theme, templates, content moved
Starting prices on shopexperts
$40 – $15,000
Median $500 among claimed profiles
The shopexperts figures come from the first 100 store build and redesign listings in September 2026. Of those, 89 have claimed profiles, and their published starting prices run from $40 to $15,000 with a median of $500. A starting price is the entry point for a small task, not the cost of a redesign.
What moves a quote: how many templates are rebuilt rather than restyled, whether you change theme, how much custom code has to be found and rebuilt, how many apps need re-placing, and whether data clean-up or integrations are in scope. Hourly rates for this work typically run $60-$150. Send your theme name and app list when you request a quote, so the estimate starts from what's actually installed.
What Shopify store development services include
Most build and redesign quotes draw on some mix of these six pieces of work:
Theme and app audit
Code edits, apps and templates reviewed before anything is quoted
Template redesign
Home, collection, product and cart templates rebuilt with new sections
Re-theme
Content and custom features rebuilt on a current, supported theme
New store build
A development-led build with custom sections and integrations from day one
Data and app clean-up
Duplicate products, tag sprawl and overlapping apps sorted before launch
Launch protection
Redirects, tracking and app blocks checked on go-live day
Shopify website redesign: common questions
It doesn't have to. Shopify product and collection URLs are built from fixed prefixes plus a handle, so if the handles stay the same, the URLs survive a theme change untouched. Rankings drop when handles change without 301 redirects, when collection text is cut to make a cleaner layout, or when new templates change heading structure and page titles. Ask the developer to crawl the site before and after launch and compare titles, headings and status codes.
Yes. Products, orders and customers live in the admin, not the theme, so they carry on as normal while the new design is built on an unpublished theme. Two things need managing. Content your team edits on the live theme during the project has to be copied across, and theme and app changes should freeze in the final week so nothing is lost at the switch.
Decide on scope, not budget. Among the first 100 build and redesign listings on shopexperts in September 2026, 35 are freelancers and 65 are agencies. A freelancer is usually the better fit for a refresh on the current theme or a small store's re-theme. An agency makes sense when Shopify website design and development, data clean-up and integrations all have to run in parallel under one project lead.
Usually not. Most redesigns work well on a current, well-supported theme with a handful of custom sections for the parts that make your brand different. A fully custom theme makes sense when your product pages or navigation genuinely can't be built from sections, or when you're large enough to maintain your own theme code long term. That is a separate service, custom theme development, and it costs more to build and to keep current.
Collaborator access so the developer can read your theme code before quoting. A list of installed apps and what each one does. The templates that drive most of your revenue, taken from your analytics. Any integrations with an ERP, 3PL or marketplace feed. Then add three stores whose structure you like, not just their look. With that in hand, quotes stop being guesses.
Sometimes, but not reliably. A redesign fixes problems caused by the storefront: confusing navigation, weak product pages, a cluttered mobile layout. It won't fix pricing, shipping costs, traffic from the wrong audience or a product people aren't looking for. If you can't point to the templates losing customers, start with a store audit. It costs less and tells you whether a redesign is the right spend.
