Shopify Store Setup Services, From Admin to Launch
A new Shopify store can look finished weeks before it can trade. The theme looks right in preview and the products are in, but nobody has put a real order through checkout, checked the tax line or seen a payout land.
A Shopify store setup service takes a store from an empty admin to its first real orders: payments, shipping, tax, theme, catalogue, customer emails and apps, then the launch itself. The expert you hire should own launch week too, because that's when setup mistakes show up.
This is for a store starting from scratch. Bringing an existing store over from another platform is a migration, reworking a live Shopify store is a redesign, and a settings-only review or a bulk product upload each has its own service. Doing the admin yourself? Work through the store setup checklist, then decide whether you still want an expert on call for launch week.
You'll find 665 experts listing store setup on shopexperts (September 2026), and most of the first 100 are agencies. Compare them below, and put your product count and launch date at the top of your brief.

What separates a strong Shopify store setup quote from a weak one
Send the five facts that set the price. Your product and variant count, the address you ship from, the countries you'll sell in, where you're registered for sales tax or VAT, and the date you want to take your first order. A one-line brief gets you a guess. Those five answers get quotes you can put side by side.
Judge past stores at checkout, not on the homepage. Every theme demo looks good, so a portfolio of homepages tells you little. Ask for three stores the expert set up in the last year and check each one on a phone, all the way to the payment step. Clear shipping options and a correct tax line show how carefully someone worked on the admin behind the storefront.
Get the scope as line items, exclusions included. Theme setup, product import, payments, shipping, tax, notifications, policies, domain and apps should each be a line with a named owner. The exclusions matter as much. Product photography, descriptions, custom sections and data from an old platform are the usual gaps that push a launch date back.
Ask where the quote ends. Some setup quotes stop at “store handed over”, with the password page still up and no order ever placed. If launch week isn't in the scope, you run it alone.
Name your launch-week contact before you sign. Ask who answers if an order fails on the first evening, how quickly, and through which channel. On an agency project, the person who sells the work often isn't the one who fixes checkout.
Signs a quote won't get you to launch. No test orders anywhere in the plan. A price quoted without a single question about your product count or shipping. Paid apps chosen before anyone has asked what the store needs to do. A finish date that falls on your launch date, leaving no time to fix what the test orders find.
What a Shopify store setup service should cover in launch week
Typical timelines run from under a month for a basic freelancer setup to 6–12 weeks for a full agency build, and bringing data across from another platform adds 2–4 weeks. Rushing costs more, and the corners it cuts are usually the launch checks below.
Launch is its own stretch of work, and it belongs in the same quote. “Launched” should mean all of this is done:
- Domain connected and set as primary, storefront password removed.
- A real order placed and refunded through each payment method you offer.
- Tax and shipping checked at checkout for every market you sell to.
- Order confirmation and shipping notification emails received and read in a real inbox.
- The first payout confirmed in your bank account.
- Analytics and ad pixels firing on real visits and purchases.
Someone watches the first orders. Agree who checks each live order through launch week, and how fast they respond when something fails. Real customers find what test orders miss — an address format nobody tried, or a discount code combined with free shipping.
The handover closes the job. Your team gets its own staff accounts. The expert's collaborator access is removed, or kept deliberately if they're staying on for support. You get a short note of what was set and why, plus a walkthrough of the theme editor settings your staff can safely edit on their own.
How much do Shopify store setup experts charge?
Three tiers cover most new-store projects. They're typical market ranges, the same ones our cost guide uses, not prices from the directory:
Basic setup
$500 – $2,500
Freelancer, existing theme, small catalogue
Standard launch
$2,500 – $10,000
Catalogue import, apps, shipping, tax, QA
Full agency build
$10,000 – $50,000+
Custom theme work, migration, complex catalogue
The catalogue and the number of countries decide the tier more than anything else. A small catalogue from a clean spreadsheet, sold in one country on a ready-made theme, is basic setup. Variants across a large range, several markets that each need shipping rates and tax checks, or product data that has to be rebuilt from supplier PDFs move a project into the standard range. Custom theme work, data from an old platform and a complex catalogue put it in the top one.
The fee covers the expert's work only. Your Shopify plan, any paid theme and app subscriptions are billed to your store on top, so ask which ones the setup assumes before you compare quotes. Our store setup cost guide breaks down what each tier usually includes. Request a quote with your product count, the countries you'll sell in and your launch date.
What Shopify store setup experts handle, from payments to handover
Most setup quotes cover the first five of these; launch and handover is the line that tends to go missing.
Payments and checkout
Shopify Payments or another provider, with every method tested
Shipping, tax and markets
Zones, rates, tax collection and Shopify Markets for each country
Theme and storefront
Your chosen theme configured with your brand, fonts and content
Products and collections
Catalogue loaded, variants structured, collections that grow with it
Domain, emails and policies
Primary domain, customer notifications and store policies ready
Launch and handover
Test orders, password off, first orders watched, staff accounts set
Shopify store setup and launch: what to know before you hire
A store configured and stocked from what you supply: your products, images, brand files and policies, set up on a theme and ready to take orders. It doesn't include the product, the brand or the marketing unless they're quoted separately. Some offers sold under the same name are pre-built stores with products already chosen for you, often for dropshipping. That's a different purchase: you're paying for someone else's product selection, and the setup is the small part of it.
When doing the setup yourself would cost more than the fee, in time or in mistakes. A single product sold in one country is often manageable with Shopify's own onboarding. Paying someone makes sense once you have a large catalogue with variants, several countries with their own tax and shipping, a fixed date such as a product drop or a trade show, or weeks you'd rather spend on the product and your first customers. A brief built around custom sections and integrations is a development-led build, which store build specialists quote separately.
Yes. For most new brands it's the better plan. What has to be finished is everything a customer touches when they buy: payments, shipping, tax, policies and order emails. The rest of the range, secondary collections, a blog and nice-to-have apps can follow in the weeks after. A core range with a tested checkout makes a better launch than the full catalogue with a checkout nobody has tried.
Mostly because of waiting, not work. Product data arrives late or in the wrong format, images aren't named to match products, the business details needed to activate payments haven't been sent, or nobody can find the login for the domain registrar. A good Shopify setup service sends a list of everything it needs from you, with dates, in the first week. Treat those dates as yours to hit, because the launch date depends on them.
It's a migration if anything has to come across: products, customers, order history or search rankings. Old URLs need mapping to redirects and customers have to reactivate their accounts, and store migration specialists scope and price that work separately. If you're starting over with nothing worth bringing, such as a new brand on a fresh domain, it's setup.
You should, from day one. Either open the store yourself and approve the expert's collaborator request, or let them build on a client transfer store from their Partner account and hand ownership to you. A transfer store can't take real payments or drop its password page until it's transferred, so schedule the handover before launch week, not during it. Whichever route you take, the owner email and the billing should be yours.
