How Quality Liquor Store Migrated from WooCommerce to Shopify and Built a Foundation for Long-Term Growth

Quality Liquor Store is a family-owned liquor retailer based in San Diego, California, with a history dating back to 1949.

Alongside its physical retail location, the business operates an established online store offering a broad selection of spirits, premium whiskey, tequila, wine, rare bottles, and personalised gifts.

With thousands of products and a substantial customer base across the United States, the business relies on its ecommerce platform to make product discovery, purchasing, and order management as straightforward as possible.

The Challenge

The initial goal was to migrate Quality Liquor Store from WooCommerce to Shopify and establish an ecommerce platform that could support its extensive product catalogue and ongoing business operations.

The migration involved more than transferring products. It required selecting and configuring a suitable Shopify theme, moving customer and product data, rebuilding collections, and managing URL redirects to preserve access to existing content.

Following the migration, my role evolved into an ongoing Shopify partnership focused on improving the customer experience, resolving technical issues, simplifying the app setup, and supporting the store as its requirements changed.

The first challenge was moving an established ecommerce business from WooCommerce to Shopify without unnecessarily disrupting its existing operations or customer experience.

The store had an extensive catalogue, existing customer records, and established product URLs that needed to be accounted for during the migration.

As our working relationship continued, we identified additional opportunities to improve the Shopify experience.

For example, session recordings revealed that mobile customers sometimes had to scroll back up lengthy product pages to reach the Add to Cart button.

There were also usability issues with the store's search functionality, including problems closing the search interface and unwanted page zooming when customers interacted with search fields on iOS devices.

Beyond the customer-facing experience, the store's app setup presented opportunities to reduce unnecessary dependencies and replace certain paid functionality with features built directly into the Shopify theme.

The challenge was to address these issues without disrupting the existing store or introducing unnecessary complexity.

Solution

Building the Right Shopify Foundation

When Quality Liquor Store decided to migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify in April 2022, I recommended the Enterprise theme as the foundation for its new storefront.

With an extensive product catalogue and a growing ecommerce business, the store needed a theme that could accommodate its merchandising requirements while providing customers with an intuitive shopping experience.

I managed the migration and implementation, including theme configuration, storefront design, product and customer imports, collection setup, URL redirects, and app integrations.

Rather than treating the project as a simple platform migration, I focused on establishing a Shopify storefront that could be maintained, customised, and improved as the business evolved.

Following the launch, I continued working with Quality Liquor Store to address technical issues, improve the customer experience, and reduce unnecessary dependencies on third-party applications.

An important detail: Enterprise is the name of the Shopify theme you recommended. We shouldn't confuse that with Shopify Plus or Shopify's enterprise-level plans.

WooCommerce to Shopify migration

Managed the migration of the existing store to Shopify, including the product catalogue, customer records, collections, theme configuration, and URL redirects.

Established a Shopify storefront that could support the business's existing operations and ongoing ecommerce requirements.

Mobile shopping experience

Used Microsoft Clarity session recordings to investigate customer behaviour and identify areas of friction.

One finding was that customers browsing longer product pages needed an easier way to purchase without scrolling back to the top.

I implemented a mobile sticky Add to Cart feature to keep the purchasing action accessible as customers explored product information.

Search usability improvements

Investigated and resolved issues affecting the store's search interface.

This included fixing a problem that prevented the search menu from closing correctly and addressing unwanted page zooming when customers interacted with search inputs on iOS devices.

These changes removed specific sources of friction from the mobile shopping experience.

Theme customisation and app simplification

Reviewed the store's existing functionality to identify opportunities to reduce its reliance on third-party applications.

One example involved replacing paid collection-related functionality with theme customisation, allowing the business to retain the functionality it needed without depending on the additional app.

Ongoing Shopify support

Continued to provide technical support, troubleshooting, storefront improvements, and advice as the business evolved.

This included working on the theme, product and collection management, promotional features, and the customer shopping journey.

Changes were reviewed and tested before being introduced to the live storefront.

Result

The migration from WooCommerce to Shopify established a new ecommerce foundation for Quality Liquor Store, supporting its extensive product catalogue and ongoing business operations.

In the years following the migration, the business experienced substantial revenue growth while continuing to develop its online presence.

My involvement evolved from managing the initial migration to providing ongoing Shopify support and optimisation.

This included improving the mobile purchasing experience, resolving search usability issues, customising the Enterprise theme, and replacing selected third-party functionality with theme-native solutions.

By maintaining an ongoing relationship with the business, I've been able to address technical challenges as they arise and implement improvements informed by the store's changing requirements.

“One of the hardest-working people I've worked with. He helped me with my website and worked tirelessly to figure things out. Reliable, dedicated, and always there when I needed him. Thank you for everything you've done for me.”
