Migrating to Shopify Plus: When to Upgrade and How (2026 Guide)

18 min read
24 Jun, 2026

Don't upgrade to Plus because you've heard you should. Upgrade when you need a Plus-specific feature: B2B catalogs (customer companies, tier pricing), Functions for custom business logic, Checkout Extensibility, expansion stores for multi-brand, or Hydrogen for headless. Outside those, Plus's $30K-$50K+/year cost is hard to justify. This covers when to upgrade, what you get, costs, and how to pick the partner.

AI Summary

Shopify Plus migration: cost is $5K-$25K to upgrade from standard Shopify, $30K-$150K+ to migrate from Magento Adobe Commerce. Plus subscription runs $2,300+/month (0.4% of revenue minimum). Justified for B2B catalogs, Functions, expansion stores, Hydrogen, or Checkout Extensibility. Not justified for 'scaling' or brand cachet. Timeline: 4-8 weeks for upgrade, 12-24 weeks for platform migration.

Most merchants who ask about Plus don't actually need it

Most merchants who ask about Shopify Plus don't actually need it. I'll say that up front because most articles on this topic are written by people selling Plus migration services and the bias shows. Plus is a real product with real advantages for specific use cases. It's also a $30,000-$200,000+/year platform cost that gets pitched to merchants who would be perfectly served by standard Shopify or Advanced Shopify at a fraction of the price.

The upgrade is worth it when you need one of the Plus-specific capabilities: B2B catalogs with customer companies and tier pricing, Functions for custom business logic, Checkout Extensibility for custom checkout work, expansion stores for multi-brand or multi-region operations, or Hydrogen for a headless storefront. Outside those specific needs, Plus is a brand cachet purchase, not a business decision.

This guide covers when Plus actually makes sense, what it costs, the two migration paths (upgrading from standard Shopify vs migrating from another platform directly to Plus), and how to pick the partner who'll handle it right. For broader migration context, see Shopify migration experts and the platform-specific guides linked at the bottom.

After 25 years in ecommerce and the last 15 in Shopify, I've run both kinds of Plus migrations more times than I can count. The honest answer on most of them is different from the marketing.

When you actually need Plus

Specific scenarios where Shopify Plus is the right call. You only need one strong reason; you don't need all of these.

You need B2B with customer-specific pricing

B2B catalogs on Plus are the closest thing to native B2B in any ecommerce platform. Customer companies (where multiple buyers belong to the same business account), location-based pricing (different prices for different customer locations), payment terms (net 30, net 60), draft orders for quote workflows. Standard Shopify can fake some of this with customer tags and apps, but the fake doesn't scale and creates ongoing maintenance.

If your business is genuinely B2B with these requirements, Plus is the right call. The annual cost is justified by the operational savings vs the maintenance burden of fake-B2B on standard Shopify.

You need custom business logic at checkout or in cart

Shopify Functions let you write custom logic that runs inside Shopify's checkout: custom shipping rules, custom discount logic, payment method customization, cart transformation. This is the replacement for Shopify Scripts, which is deprecated.

If your business logic is complex enough that you can't model it with standard discounts and shipping rules — B2B-specific shipping costs, tiered discounts based on customer segments, region-specific payment method customization — you need Functions, which means you need Plus.

You need to customize the checkout experience

Checkout Extensibility lets you add custom apps and UI components to Shopify's checkout. Custom fields, upsells, post-purchase flows, custom payment confirmations, B2B-specific checkout flows. This replaces the deprecated Checkout.liquid customization.

If your checkout needs anything beyond defaults — custom fields for delivery instructions, B2B PO number capture, age verification, region-specific compliance flows — you need Checkout Extensibility, which means Plus.

You operate multiple brands or regions

Plus includes up to 9 expansion stores under one subscription. Each expansion store is a full Shopify store with its own theme, products, currency, language, and admin. Used for multi-brand operations (parent company runs several brand storefronts) or multi-region (US store, UK store, EU store).

If you're managing this complexity on standard Shopify, you're paying for multiple separate subscriptions, dealing with inventory sync issues, and rebuilding shared functionality repeatedly. Plus consolidates this at scale.

You're going headless with Hydrogen or a custom storefront

Hydrogen is Shopify's React-based framework for building headless storefronts hosted on Oxygen. Plus includes Hydrogen access. Custom headless implementations (with frameworks like Next.js) also typically run on Plus for the higher API rate limits.

Headless makes sense when you need a frontend experience Shopify themes can't deliver: highly custom interactions, content-heavy commerce, performance-optimized storefronts at scale. It's a real choice with real trade-offs — covered later in this article.

Your revenue justifies the math

Plus subscription is $2,300/month or 0.4% of revenue, whichever is higher, up to about $40,000/month for high-volume merchants. At $10M annual revenue, that's $3,333/month minimum ($40K/year). At $50M revenue, it's $16,667/month ($200K/year). At $100M+, you negotiate.

For most stores doing $1M-$3M, the Plus cost is hard to justify unless one of the feature needs above applies. For stores doing $5M+, the feature benefits typically pay back the subscription cost via operational efficiency and conversion improvements.

When NOT to upgrade to Plus

Counter-intuitive but important: the scenarios where Plus is the wrong choice. Many merchants who ask about Plus fall into one of these categories.

You think Plus will solve scaling problems you haven't actually hit

Standard Shopify handles surprisingly high revenue. Stores doing $5M-$10M annually run cleanly on Advanced Shopify with no Plus features. The platform scales to the volume; the question is whether you need Plus-specific features, not whether Plus is required for your revenue tier.

Upgrading because you 'expect to scale' without specific Plus features in mind is buying capability you don't use. The savings from staying on standard until you need a specific Plus feature can fund significant marketing or product investment instead.

You want the brand cachet of being 'on Plus'

This is a real reason merchants upgrade and it's almost always wrong. Customers don't see the difference. Vendors don't treat you better. Investors don't value you higher because of platform tier. The cachet is internal to the merchant; the cost is external.

You want better Shopify support

Plus comes with a Merchant Success Manager and Launch Engineer support, which is real. But it's not worth the price tag alone. If support is your primary motivator, look at standard support escalation paths, work with a strong agency partner, or use Plus support consulting from a partner rather than paying for Plus subscription.

You're using 'we'll need Plus eventually' to justify it now

Eventually is a budget conversation. Now is also a budget conversation. The right time to upgrade is when you have a specific Plus feature need. Upgrading 6-12 months early because eventually is coming costs you the difference for that period without unlocking any new value.

You're being pushed to Plus by an agency that benefits from the upgrade

Agencies sometimes get partner incentives from Plus signups, plus the operational reality that Plus engagements have higher revenue per client. The pressure isn't always corrupt; it's sometimes just incentive misalignment. Get a second opinion from an operator who doesn't benefit from the upgrade.

Your business model fits standard Shopify cleanly

Most B2C DTC businesses doing standard ecommerce with retail customer relationships fit standard or Advanced Shopify cleanly. Apparel, beauty, supplements, home goods, electronics, accessories — the entire mainstream of ecommerce. Plus features are designed for use cases standard Shopify doesn't handle well; if your business doesn't have those use cases, you don't need Plus.

The two migration paths

Plus migration has two paths with very different cost, timeline, and complexity profiles.

Path 1: Standard Shopify upgrading to Plus

You're already on Shopify (Basic, Shopify, or Advanced Shopify) and upgrading to Plus. The platform is the same; the upgrade unlocks Plus-specific features and capacity.

This is the easier migration. Your products, customers, orders, theme, apps, integrations, and SEO foundation all stay where they are.

The upgrade work focuses on three areas: configuring the Plus-specific features you're upgrading for (B2B catalogs, Functions, Checkout Extensibility, expansion stores), migrating off any standard-Shopify workarounds you built (fake-B2B with customer tags, hacky checkout customizations), and taking advantage of Plus support during launch.

Typical cost: $5,000-$25,000 for most Shopify-to-Plus upgrades. Higher if you're implementing complex B2B setup or multiple expansion stores. Timeline: 4-8 weeks for typical upgrades; 8-16 weeks if B2B implementation is significant.

Path 2: Direct migration from another platform to Plus

You're on Magento Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce Enterprise, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, or a custom platform, and migrating directly to Plus rather than going through standard Shopify first.

This is everything a standard platform-to-Shopify migration is, plus the Plus-specific setup work. Adobe Commerce to Plus migrations almost always go this route because the source has B2B features that need Plus B2B catalogs on the destination — there's no point migrating to standard Shopify first.

Typical cost: $30,000-$150,000+ depending on source platform complexity, B2B requirements, multi-store setup, and custom Function development. Timeline: 12-24 weeks for typical platform-to-Plus migrations; 16-30 weeks for complex Adobe Commerce migrations with B2B and multi-store. For Magento-specific pricing detail, see Magento to Shopify migration cost.

Which path applies to you

If you're on Shopify already and adding Plus features, Path 1. If you're moving from another platform and you need Plus features, Path 2. If you're moving from another platform and you don't need Plus features, neither — you should migrate to standard or Advanced Shopify and skip Plus entirely.

Many merchants on Adobe Commerce assume they have to go directly to Plus. Sometimes they do (B2B complexity, expansion stores). Often they don't (standard DTC with B2C customer relationships). The migration audit should answer this question explicitly, not assume.

What Plus actually gives you

The Plus-specific features, with honest assessment of which actually matter for which use cases.

B2B catalogs (customer companies, tier pricing, terms)

The single biggest Plus differentiator for B2B businesses. Customer companies let multiple buyers belong to one business account with shared payment methods, addresses, and order history. Location-based pricing varies by customer location. Tier pricing varies by volume or customer segment. Net terms (30/60/90 days) for invoicing. Draft orders for quote workflows.

If you're doing real B2B with these requirements, B2B catalogs alone justify Plus. The maintenance cost of faking these on standard Shopify with apps and tags exceeds the Plus subscription cost within months.

Shopify Functions (custom backend logic)

Functions let you write custom business logic that runs server-side in Shopify's checkout: shipping customization, discount customization, payment customization, delivery customization, cart transformation. Replaces the deprecated Shopify Scripts.

If your business logic doesn't fit Shopify's standard discount and shipping models, Functions is how you handle it without managing a backend. Custom Function development typically costs $5K-$30K per function depending on complexity.

Checkout Extensibility

Checkout Extensibility lets you customize Shopify's checkout with apps and custom UI components: custom fields, upsells, post-purchase flows, B2B-specific checkout, region-specific compliance. Replaces the deprecated Checkout.liquid.

If you need any non-default checkout behavior, you need Checkout Extensibility. Standard Shopify checkout is good but rigid; serious customization requires Plus.

Expansion stores (up to 9 included)

Multi-brand or multi-region operations on one Plus subscription. Each expansion store is a separate Shopify store with its own theme, products, currency, language, admin. Shared backend (Plus dashboard) but separate frontends.

If you're managing 2+ separate Shopify subscriptions for different brands or regions, expansion stores typically consolidate cost while improving operational coherence. Real lift; not theoretical.

Hydrogen and Oxygen (headless framework)

Hydrogen is Shopify's React framework for building headless storefronts. Oxygen is the hosting platform. Plus includes both.

Headless is a real choice with real trade-offs. Pros: highly custom frontend experiences, content-commerce integration, performance optimization at scale. Cons: significantly higher development cost ($50K-$300K+ for a Hydrogen build), ongoing maintenance burden, loss of theme ecosystem advantages. Worth it for stores with specific frontend requirements that themes can't deliver. Overkill for most.

Higher API rate limits and analytics

Plus has higher API call limits (good for stores with heavy integrations or custom apps) and access to ShopifyQL for custom analytics queries. Plus stores also get access to Shopify Audiences for cross-merchant audience data sharing in ads.

These are nice-to-have rather than dealmakers for most merchants. If you're hitting standard API limits or struggling with analytics, they matter. If you're not, they don't justify upgrade alone.

Dedicated support (Merchant Success Manager + Launch Engineer)

Plus comes with assigned support staff: a Merchant Success Manager who manages the account relationship, and a Launch Engineer who handles technical support during launches and migrations. Real benefit; real cost. Don't upgrade for support alone, but it's a meaningful add to other Plus benefits.

Realistic costs and timeline

What Plus migration actually costs and how long it takes.

Plus subscription cost

  • Standard Plus: $2,300/month or 0.4% of revenue, whichever is higher
  • At $10M annual revenue: $3,333/month minimum ($40K/year)
  • At $25M annual revenue: $8,333/month minimum ($100K/year)
  • At $50M annual revenue: $16,667/month minimum ($200K/year)
  • Above $100M: negotiated, typically capped around $40K/month
  • Annual commitment discounts available (typically 5-15%)

Path 1 migration cost (Shopify to Plus upgrade)

  • Standard upgrade with no Plus-specific configuration: $5,000-$10,000
  • Upgrade with B2B catalog setup: $15,000-$30,000
  • Upgrade with Functions development: $10,000-$50,000 depending on Function complexity

  • Custom platform to Plus: variable; typically $50,000-$200,000+

Timeline by migration path

  • Shopify to Plus upgrade (no major Plus feature work): 4-6 weeks
  • Shopify to Plus with B2B setup: 8-12 weeks
  • Shopify to Plus with custom Functions: 8-16 weeks
  • Shopify to Plus with expansion store launch: 8-12 weeks per expansion store
  • Shopify to Plus with Hydrogen rebuild: 20-40 weeks

SEO during a Plus migration

Plus migrations carry the same SEO preservation risks as any other migration, plus a few Plus-specific considerations.

Standard SEO preservation work

Same redirect map, schema preservation, sitemap resubmission, and post-launch monitoring as any migration. The fundamentals don't change because you're going to Plus. See Will Migrating to Shopify Hurt My SEO? for the full framework.

Plus-specific SEO considerations

  • Expansion stores need their own SEO setup. Each expansion store is a separate Shopify store with its own sitemap, Search Console property, schema markup, and SEO content. Treat each as a full SEO project, not a copy of the parent.
  • Multi-region setups need hreflang. Expansion stores serving different countries need hreflang tags configured to tell Google which version to show which users. Default Plus setup doesn't handle this automatically.
  • Hydrogen and headless setups need explicit SEO planning. Default Shopify themes handle SEO basics automatically. Hydrogen headless stores need explicit setup for sitemaps, robots.txt, meta tags, schema, canonical tags. Missing any of these in a headless launch causes serious SEO problems.
  • B2B catalog pages need indexation strategy. Should your B2B customer-only pricing pages be indexed? Usually no — they're behind login. Configure robots.txt and meta robots tags to keep them out of public search results.

For deeper Shopify Plus-specific SEO context, see Shopify Plus SEO.

Choosing a Plus migration partner

Plus migrations require a different partner than standard Shopify migrations. The skill set, certifications, and case study profile all matter.

Verified Plus migration case studies

Three to five Plus migrations they've shipped in the last 18 months, with merchant names you can verify, source platforms similar to yours, and specific Plus feature implementations (B2B catalogs, Functions, expansion stores, Hydrogen) that match what you need. Generic 'we've done Plus work' isn't enough; you need source-platform-specific or feature-specific case studies.

Shopify Plus Partner status

Plus Partner certification indicates documented Plus implementation experience. Premier Partner is the highest tier and signals significant Plus capability. Both matter for serious Plus engagements. Lack of Plus Partner status is not disqualifying for individual specialists but is a yellow flag for agencies pitching Plus work.

Functions and Checkout Extensibility development capability

If you need custom Functions or Checkout Extensibility apps, the partner needs in-house development capability for these specifically. Functions are written in WebAssembly-compatible languages (typically Rust or JavaScript via the function-runner); Checkout Extensibility apps are React components. Not every Plus partner has both skills.

B2B catalog implementation experience

If B2B is part of your migration, the partner needs documented experience with customer companies, location-based pricing, payment terms, draft orders, and the B2B-specific aspects of theme work. B2B implementation is its own discipline within Plus.

Expansion store and multi-store experience

If you're launching expansion stores, the partner needs experience with cross-store inventory sync, shared customer data, multi-region tax compliance, and the operational patterns that make multi-store work in practice.

Hydrogen and headless experience (if applicable)

Hydrogen development is meaningfully different from standard Shopify theme work. React knowledge, Hydrogen-specific patterns, Oxygen deployment experience, headless SEO setup. Not every Plus partner has this; verify if it's part of your scope.

Clear engagement structure for enterprise scale

Plus migrations at $50K+ should use phased contracts with separate scopes and pricing per phase, not single-fixed-price arrangements. The contract structure matters at this scale.

To compare vetted Plus migration partners, see Shopify migration experts. For broader Plus expert hiring context, see How to Hire a Shopify Store Setup Expert.

What you gain operationally

Beyond the specific Plus features, what changes about running the business after upgrading or migrating to Plus.

Less workaround maintenance

If you were on standard Shopify faking B2B with customer tags and apps, that workaround was costing you maintenance time. Real B2B catalogs replace it cleanly. Same pattern for fake-multi-store via multiple subscriptions vs expansion stores: the workaround was costing operational overhead the upgrade removes.

Cleaner architecture for the technical team

Functions and Checkout Extensibility give your engineering team supported, documented patterns for custom business logic. Versus the old approach of hacking around Shopify constraints with apps and theme code, the architecture is significantly cleaner. Easier to maintain, easier to onboard new developers, easier to evolve.

Better support during incidents

Plus support response times and incident handling are meaningfully better than standard Shopify support. For stores with serious revenue, the support quality difference matters during outages, payment processing issues, or platform changes that affect operations.

Shopify Audiences for ad efficiency

Shopify Audiences uses cross-merchant audience data to improve Facebook and Google ad performance. The lift is real (typically 10-25% improvement in ad CAC) but variable by category. For stores with significant paid advertising spend ($1M+/year), this alone often justifies the Plus subscription.

Higher operational ceiling

Plus removes most of the platform-level ceilings standard Shopify enforces: API rate limits, expansion store count, theme customization depth via Checkout Extensibility, custom logic via Functions. The ceiling is higher; what you do with it is the question.

Common scenarios and the right path for each

Common decision scenarios and the right path for each.

Standard Shopify B2C DTC, $2M-$5M revenue, no B2B

Don't upgrade. Plus features don't match your business model. The subscription cost is wasted unless one of the specific feature needs applies. Stay on Advanced Shopify and use the savings for marketing or product investment.

Standard Shopify, $5M-$15M, growing into B2B

Upgrade when B2B is more than 10-15% of revenue or when fake-B2B workarounds are visibly costing operational time. Path 1 upgrade is straightforward, 8-12 weeks with B2B setup, $15K-$30K migration cost. Plus subscription pays back via operational efficiency within 6-12 months.

Magento Adobe Commerce with B2B, any revenue tier

Migrate to Plus directly. Adobe Commerce B2B features have closest match in Plus B2B catalogs; going to standard Shopify first would create a workaround you'd have to undo later. Path 2 migration, 16-24 weeks, $60K-$150K cost. The Adobe license savings ($20K-$200K+/year) pays back the migration within 12-18 months.

BigCommerce Enterprise with custom checkout work

Likely Plus migration if your custom checkout work needs Checkout Extensibility. If your checkout customization was minor, standard Shopify might fit. Audit the checkout customization specifically before assuming Plus is required.

Multi-brand operation on 3+ separate Shopify stores

Upgrade to Plus and migrate to expansion stores. The cost consolidation pays back within months for multi-brand operations. Plus expansion stores also let you share customer data, inventory, and operational tools across brands in ways separate subscriptions can't.

Wanting to go headless with Hydrogen

Plus required. Plan for $50K-$300K+ in Hydrogen development on top of Plus subscription. Make sure you actually need headless before committing — for most stores, a well-built standard Shopify theme outperforms a poorly-built Hydrogen storefront. Headless is a real choice; not the default.

Custom platform with complex business logic

Likely Plus, because the custom logic typically needs Functions. The migration is its own scoping exercise — custom platforms vary enormously in what they're doing. Audit phase is critical and probably worth paying for as a separate consulting engagement before committing to a migration partner.

Currently on Shopify, considering Plus 'because we're growing'

Don't upgrade based on revenue projections alone. Identify the specific Plus feature you'll need within the next 12 months. If you can't name one, you don't need Plus yet. Standard or Advanced Shopify handles $10M-$25M revenue cleanly; the upgrade trigger should be a feature need, not a revenue milestone.

Speed & Performance Specialist for Shopify Stores - and the measurement behind your revenue

I helped an apparel brand cut product-page load time from 15.4 seconds to 7.4 seconds - five weeks before Black Friday. That's what I do: I find what's slowing your store down and fix it.

The same work keeps surfacing a second problem: stores where the numbers are broken. Pixels firing twice and double-counting conversions. Ad campaigns spending across the whole catalog with no filter on what actually earns. Apps billing every month for work nobody has measured. So alongside speed, I measure what your money - ad spend, apps, tracking - is actually doing, instead of trusting what the platforms and vendors report. Then I fix what the measurement finds.

I specialize in Shopify speed optimization, Core Web Vitals, ad-spend and tracking measurement, and sales-channel recovery for established, founder-run stores. I treat speed and ad spend the same way: as revenue problems, not technical checkboxes.

What I work on:

  • Speed audits and Core Web Vitals optimization

  • Ad-spend clarity - which products earn your Google/Meta budget, measured per product

  • Meta Pixel and GA4 tracking setup, audits, and double-counting fixes

  • App and tool bill audits - is each paid app earning what it charges? Where a paid app is doing what Shopify Flow already does natively, I replace it with a built-in workflow, including the multi-step logic that prompt-built automations get wrong

  • Sales-channel recovery - when your products stop showing in Google Shopping or on Meta, finding why the catalog fell out (feed disapprovals, a dropped channel connection, market or policy misconfiguration) and getting them back in front of shoppers - verified on the storefront a shopper sees, not a green light in a dashboard

  • Server-side tracking and attribution contamination fixes

  • Ongoing monitoring and technical support - monthly Store Care across speed, tracking, apps and channels, or a support pack of hours

Key results:

  • Product-page load time cut from 15.4s to 7.4s - 52% faster

  • Mobile PageSpeed on product pages from 18 to 28 - with the client's chosen app stack kept in place, at their call

  • Two apps billing to track what the store's own Google channel already handled - removed, tracking verified clean, and $199/yr off the app bill

  • Repeat clients going back to 2018 - one store at 14 projects across four years

How I work:

  • A diagnostic audit measures the actual problem - no guesswork, and the audit fee credits toward the fixes

  • Phased implementation - you approve each milestone

  • Every delivery closes with verified before/after numbers and a short list of the next opportunities I found

80+ projects completed. Clients across the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Denmark.

Send me your store URL and I'll tell you exactly what's slowing it down - and whether your numbers can be trusted. No commitment needed.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify Plus migration

When should I migrate to Shopify Plus?

When you need one of the Plus-specific features: B2B catalogs (customer companies, location-based pricing, tier pricing, payment terms), Functions for custom backend business logic, Checkout Extensibility for custom checkout customization, expansion stores for multi-brand or multi-region operations, or Hydrogen for a headless storefront. Outside these specific feature needs, Plus is hard to justify. Revenue alone isn't a Plus trigger; standard or Advanced Shopify handles $10M-$25M revenue cleanly without Plus features.

How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?

Plus subscription is $2,300/month or 0.4% of revenue, whichever is higher, up to about $40,000/month for high-volume merchants. At $5M annual revenue: $2,300/month ($28K/year). At $10M revenue: $3,333/month ($40K/year). At $25M revenue: $8,333/month ($100K/year). At $50M revenue: $16,667/month ($200K/year). Above $100M is negotiated. Annual commitment discounts of 5-15% available. Add migration cost (one-time): $5K-$25K for Shopify-to-Plus upgrade, $30K-$150K+ for platform-to-Plus migration.

What's the difference between standard Shopify and Shopify Plus?

Plus adds: B2B catalogs (customer companies, tier pricing, terms), Shopify Functions (custom backend logic), Checkout Extensibility (custom checkout), expansion stores (up to 9 included), Hydrogen and Oxygen for headless storefronts, higher API rate limits, Shopify Audiences for ad targeting, ShopifyQL for custom analytics, and dedicated support (Merchant Success Manager + Launch Engineer). Standard Shopify and Advanced Shopify handle catalog, customers, orders, themes, apps, and most ecommerce operations cleanly without these additions. The upgrade is feature-driven, not revenue-driven.

Can I migrate from Magento directly to Shopify Plus?

Yes, and you usually should if you need Plus features. Adobe Commerce migrations almost always go direct to Plus because the source has B2B features that need Plus B2B catalogs on the destination. Magento Open Source migrations can go to standard Shopify, Advanced Shopify, or Plus depending on feature needs. Direct platform-to-Plus migrations are more expensive ($30K-$150K+) than Shopify-to-Plus upgrades ($5K-$25K) but avoid the workaround-and-rebuild cycle of migrating through standard Shopify first.

How long does a Shopify Plus migration take?

Depends on path. Standard Shopify to Plus upgrade: 4-8 weeks for typical upgrades, 8-16 weeks if B2B implementation is significant. Magento Open Source to Plus: 12-16 weeks. Adobe Commerce to Plus with B2B: 16-24 weeks. Adobe Commerce to Plus with B2B plus multi-store plus custom development: 24-40 weeks. Hydrogen headless rebuilds add 20-40 weeks on top of base migration timeline. The variance is real and driven by feature complexity, not vendor pricing games.

Is Shopify Plus worth it for a $5M revenue store?

Depends on use case. At $5M revenue, Plus subscription is $2,300/month minimum ($28K/year). For B2C DTC with no B2B and no custom checkout needs: probably not worth it. For B2B businesses: usually worth it for the catalog features alone. For multi-brand: usually worth it for expansion stores. For stores with significant paid ad spend ($1M+/year): often worth it for Shopify Audiences ad lift. The decision should be feature-driven; revenue alone isn't enough to justify Plus.

Do I need Shopify Plus for B2B?

For serious B2B with customer-specific pricing, payment terms, and quote workflows, yes. Plus B2B catalogs are the closest thing to native B2B in any ecommerce platform. Standard Shopify can fake B2B with customer tags and apps but the workarounds don't scale and create maintenance burden. For light B2B (occasional wholesale orders with manual pricing), standard Shopify works. The threshold for upgrading is when B2B revenue exceeds 10-15% of total or when fake-B2B workarounds are visibly costing operational time.

What's the cost to migrate from standard Shopify to Shopify Plus?

Standard Shopify to Plus upgrade migrations are surprisingly affordable because the data is already in Shopify format. Cost ranges: $5,000-$10,000 for a basic upgrade with no major Plus feature work, $15,000-$30,000 with B2B catalog setup, $10,000-$50,000 with custom Function development, $10,000-$40,000 with Checkout Extensibility apps and custom checkout flows, $15,000-$40,000 with expansion store rollout, $50,000-$300,000+ for Hydrogen headless rebuilds. Most upgrades land at the $10K-$30K range.

Should I use Hydrogen with Shopify Plus?

Only if you need headless. Hydrogen is real and well-built but it's a significant commitment: $50K-$300K+ in development cost, ongoing maintenance burden, loss of theme ecosystem advantages, harder operations for non-technical teams. Worth it for stores with specific frontend requirements that themes can't deliver (highly custom interactions, content-commerce integration, performance optimization at scale). Overkill for most stores. A well-built standard Shopify theme outperforms a poorly-built Hydrogen storefront. Default to themes; choose headless deliberately.

Plus is the right call when you need its specific features and the wrong call when you don't. The honest answer for most merchants who ask about Plus is 'not yet' — standard or Advanced Shopify handles your business cleanly until a specific Plus feature need emerges.
