Honest section on where Mailchimp is actually the better platform. These aren't rare edge cases — they cover legitimate business types.
Content-first brands (newsletters, publications, media)
If email is your product (not just your marketing channel), Mailchimp's content editor is genuinely better than Klaviyo's. Better typography controls, better long-form layouts, better handling of newsletter formats. Publishers running newsletters as revenue drivers should default to Mailchimp (or Beehiiv or Substack for pure publisher use cases) rather than Klaviyo.
Service businesses (not ecommerce)
Service businesses selling appointments, memberships, courses, or non-physical products don't benefit from Klaviyo's Shopify integration — there's no Shopify to integrate with. Mailchimp's general-purpose approach fits service businesses better. Klaviyo has non-Shopify integrations but they're not what makes it special.
Stores under $200K where free tier is enough
Mailchimp's free tier is more generous than Klaviyo's. 500 contacts vs 250 profiles. 1,000 emails/month vs 500. For stores where the free tier covers the whole program, Mailchimp offers a real free option that Klaviyo doesn't match. Once the store outgrows the free tier, Klaviyo starts making sense — but pre-that-point, Mailchimp is legitimate.
Teams already fluent in Mailchimp
Switching costs are real. Team learning curve to Klaviyo is 20-40 hours for someone comfortable in Mailchimp. Retraining time, workflow rebuilding, template redesign. For stores where Mailchimp is currently producing acceptable results and the team is fluent, the migration cost may outweigh Klaviyo's incremental benefit.
Multi-brand agencies
Mailchimp's account structure supports agency workflows (managing multiple client accounts under one login) more cleanly than Klaviyo's. Agencies managing 10+ small client accounts often prefer Mailchimp for the account management, even if the individual store results would be better on Klaviyo.
Simpler interface preference
Mailchimp's interface is genuinely more approachable for non-technical users. Klaviyo's power comes with complexity; the flow builder, segmentation UI, and reporting all have steeper learning curves. For solo founders or teams without email marketing specialists, Mailchimp's easier interface can produce better results than Klaviyo's more powerful interface used badly.
Multi-channel marketing beyond email/SMS
Mailchimp has Postcards (physical mail), a landing page builder, social ads integration, and a broader marketing platform. If you want one tool for email plus other marketing channels, Mailchimp covers more ground. Klaviyo focuses tightly on email and SMS; other channels require other tools.
