Before talking migration, an honest map of the WordPress non-WooCommerce ecommerce landscape. Different setups have different migration profiles.
Embedded Shopify Buy Buttons
Most common scenario. The WordPress site handles content; Shopify Buy Buttons embedded in WordPress pages handle commerce. Customers click a button, get sent to Shopify checkout (often a Shopify subdomain like store.yourdomain.com). The setup is half WordPress, half Shopify already.
Migration is straightforward: move the content to Shopify pages or rebuild content presentation in Shopify theme, retire the WordPress site. The Shopify commerce side already exists. Mostly content migration work.
Third-party checkout (Stripe, PayPal, Gumroad embeds)
WordPress site with embedded checkout from third-party services. Stripe checkout embeds, PayPal buttons, Gumroad embeds, ThriveCart embeds. The WordPress side handles content and product display; the third-party handles transaction.
Migration: bring all commerce into Shopify, decommission third-party checkouts, restructure product presentation in Shopify. Customer data export from third-party services into Shopify customer records.
Easy Digital Downloads (EDD)
WordPress plugin for selling digital products: ebooks, software, music, downloadable files. EDD has its own database, customer management, and digital delivery system. Distinct from WooCommerce; lighter weight and focused on digital products.
Migration: digital product catalog to Shopify with digital download apps (SendOwl, FetchApp, Single Music Twist). Customer records and order history transfer. Digital delivery system replaced. License key management if applicable needs custom handling.
MemberPress and membership plugins
WordPress plugin for membership and gated content. Stores use it to sell access to premium content, courses, communities. Customer accounts, subscription billing, content gating — all handled by MemberPress (or alternatives: Restrict Content Pro, WP-Members, Paid Memberships Pro).
Migration to Shopify: depends on what the membership functionality is doing. Options: Shopify with membership apps (Bold Memberships, Locksmith), Shopify with Recharge for subscription-based memberships, or hybrid setup keeping WordPress for content gating with Shopify for commerce. Decision matters and affects scope significantly.
LearnDash and learning management commerce
WordPress plugin for selling courses. Often combined with MemberPress for subscription access or WooCommerce for one-time purchase. Course content, quiz logic, progress tracking — all WordPress-side.
Migration: courses don't cleanly migrate to Shopify. Options: keep courses on WordPress with Shopify handling commerce only (hybrid), or move to a dedicated course platform like Teachable, Thinkific, or Kajabi with Shopify separately. Pure Shopify isn't usually the right destination for course-led businesses.
WP eCommerce and other deprecated plugins
WP eCommerce was an early WordPress ecommerce plugin that's largely been replaced by WooCommerce. Some legacy sites still use it. Migration approach similar to WooCommerce migration but with smaller migration tool support; often requires custom scripts.
SureCart and newer WordPress ecommerce
SureCart and similar newer WordPress ecommerce plugins. Migration tools have limited support; often requires custom export-and-import work. Less common scenario but worth flagging if applicable.
Manual / DIY checkout
WordPress site with manual payment processing (Venmo, bank transfer, manual invoicing) and product display via WordPress pages. Common in early-stage businesses. Migration is essentially a fresh Shopify build with content migration; existing "commerce" is informal enough that there's little to preserve.
