Shopify themes are built from sections, and each section sets the shape of the words inside it. A hero banner has room for a short headline and a line beneath it. An image-with-text block wants a heading and a compact paragraph, and FAQ blocks expect a question with a brief answer.
Collection descriptions appear above or below the product grid depending on the theme. A writer working from the live theme and its section limits hands over copy that fits; one working from a blank document hands over a layout problem.
Each page also has its own job:
- Homepage: who the store is for and where to go next. Positioning first, then routes into the main collections.
- About page: why a stranger should trust you. Who makes the product, where, and what you stand behind.
- Collection intros: help with choosing. Keep the description to a line or two if the theme shows it above the grid. Shopify gives each collection only one description field, so fuller buying guidance beneath the products needs a second text block, usually a collection metafield the theme displays; check it exists before briefing both.
- FAQ and policy pages: remove the doubts that stall a purchase, from delivery times to returns, in plain language that matches your actual terms.
Keep SEO titles and meta descriptions in the same brief. Shopify gives pages, collections and blog posts their own SEO fields, and snippets written alongside the copy match it. For the search side of collection copy, see the collection page SEO guide.
